Midwest & South - Football = Religion
Northeast - Football = Entertainment

Midwest & South - You go watch the team regardless and because there is nothing else to do in those God-awful places
Northeast - You go watch the team only if they are good because there are plenty of other things to do

I think that is correct. It is basically a result of the way the country was developed. There were not many private universities in the Midwest & South so Congress passed the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862. Midwestern and Southern states took more advantage of the Act than Northeastern states, where there were numerous private institutions and less need for land-grant schools. That is why there are so many large large land-grant universities that have dominated their states for more than a century. (NY's only land-grant university is Cornell!)

Eighteen of the 20 SEC and Big10 schools are land-grant schools. It is regional and cultural.
