is that one of our Defensive ends loves to crash down almost right of the tackle's ass and goes unblocked most of the time. He just takes himself right out of the play way too many times.

Virginia was successful on their jet sweep plays as the D.E. crashes down the line and there back runs right by him. He needs to a take a straight up and box out approach when he sees their back starting to run in motion down the line.

Either the back gets the ball or he becomes another free blocker on the edge while or D.E. is spinning aroung and becomes just a spectator on the play. He needs to nail their jet sweep guy to keep him from either running or becoming a blocker in free space.

I don't like to name names, but this is the type of play you normally see from a high school player.

Is this a scheme design? I don't know, but if it is it needs to change.

Yeah, the lack of containment has been glaring the last two weeks. Moreso when compared to our opposition, who seem to always be sitting on our sweeps/options/screens. It would be awesome if that lack of discipline resulted in more pressures/sacks/TFL...but right now, they are - as you say - just taking themselves out of the play regularly.

We have done that for years though. We put a lot of stress on our OLBs to get out there and make a play. I think it was the Minny game one year where they kept running the same play and we never adjusted our DEs. Maybe Louisville last year too.

I can understand if a team is running the zone read or is faking a dive. But yesterday there where a few straight up runs to the outside with the RB where our DEs took themselves out of the play. There was no threat of an inside run or a QB run.
