You want to be a national joke? Fire your coach after two years if you a school like Syracuse.
A national joke with these injuries, sure. A national joke without any injuries, no. It'd sure be nice to have the real 1st team offense available.

Too early to call for his head for sure, I can try to handle my emotions and stay reasonable there.

But, I dont think we looked good while all healthy either.

And coaching matters regardless of personel. Sure, it's easier when you have your guys out there, but injuries had 0 impact on calling a fake punt or playing for a hail mary to close the half.

edit:

And to add to this post, it's very difficult to evaluate any coach with said injuries. The problem is you can be a bad coach with healthy players, and you can be a bad coach with injured players. In our case, the injuries may just be masking the poor coaching, and I say that based on the points I made above.

And by bad, I mean simply in over your head. Not everyone is meant to coach, just like not everyone is meant to be a team captain.

There's no simple answer here. That being said, this game was 10-10 and then stunning decisions led to a pretty epic collapse.

All good points. I don't disagree with any of them.

That's where I'm at.

That said... I'd love to have Shafer turn this around, but where's that going to come from? Is that tiger going to change his stripes? He's all chips in with his guys - I think we know what we have there. I don't think it's much. Are we going to all of a sudden have a smarter team, with a staff making smarter coaching decisions? Are we going to have much of a talent influx?

All along I've believed 2015 was going to be the year. Now... that year I'm dreaming of just feels so far away.

Like stanford did. One person ridiculed that. The CEO of Chapstick

It takes longer than 2015. We don't have talent. People way over rate our guys. What first or second round picks to we have on this team?

Don't compare us with Stanford. We aren't in their league. They have big dough. Our next hire will be like all of our hires. Grob. a defensive coordinator. Marrone, an offensive coordinator. P. a line backer coach, that coached at directional ct schools, coach mac, a linebacker coach who coached at UMass, Maloney, a position coach at Michigan. We don't hire big time coaches.

Do injuries/lack of talent/et al have anything to do with the incredible lack of discipline, consistent wasting of timeouts, total asinine play calling???

In my head, the equation looked like this:

Experienced, cohesive staff + right offensive system + right defensive system + senior QB/promising young QBs + depth at all positions + emerging young talent on both sides of the ball = potential Top 25 team.

It's looking a bit different right now.

That's why it's so hard to swallow.

no, no and yes. Bad and inexperienced players limit what you can do on offense.

Why does money make it less of a joke? Harbaugh was at sd state. Whoopdeedoo

Physically impaired players and a mentally impaired coach aren't mutually exclusive

This^. Great post.

I would have maybe changed the wording used by Milly, but the principle is spot on.

When we play some team in hoops I feel bad for their young coach because I know he can't compete with Jim Boeheim. Do you honestly think Shafer can compete with any of the coaches we face?
He is a freaking lightweight and was our cheapest option.

This is why we can't afford to go offsides 6 times in the same game.
My god thank you. How many bleeping times are we going to have a blitzer go offsides and nobody blame the damn coaches.
Shafer is a good man but the guy looks over his head. I watch other teams with less talent look better and show improvement. I get we have injuries but c'mon Doug Marrone in 2009 didn't have a lot of bodies and that team wasn't this bad. Wilson and Kimbel are good kids I am sure but our passing game was nonexistent. Slants/out routes I mean these are passes that aren't tough. I don't expect deep balls but c'mon. This offense was horrible yet again.

That's a painful comparison.

Fixed

Injuries are part of the game. Football is a game of attrition. We need to figure out What happened this year with the injuries because the way our players went down isn't a fluke, I refuse to believe that. Coaching/S&C needs to be re-evaluated big time.
