is that the most negative, most hysterical, most over the top people here are the ones that were most certain and loudest that Marrone was a disaster here and a failure and that he was going to fail in Buffalo.

Given their track record of recent assessments and predictions Shafer will probably do okay.

Are there problems, absolutely. They are underperforming to the overall talent on the squad a bit. Not in the win/loss outcome, that is about as predicted, but within the game. The three games that were blowouts I assumed the defense was going to get lit up back in August, so not really surprised, but it's been worse than I thought it would be.

Not sure what the dynamics are overall, coaching, gameplanning, over all change, lack of leadership in the lockerroom, injuries, ...

Wake and BC are must wins, should wins. Split Pitt/Maryland and the season hits the mark.

People need to stop assuming no more wins going forward. There was a lot of that going into NCst.

The roster has been much improved over the last 5 years, but it's still the number one problem the program has. They need to get some impact players in the program, you can't out scheme and out effort your way to 8 wins every year, there's no magin for error. Obviously they need to get out of their own way with the gameplanning and in game, but if this is a staff that can improve the talent level, then wholesale changes is probably not the way to go.

There are still four peer games left, folks need to take a deep breath, suspend judgment and wait to see how this shakes out.

I'm disappointed in Bullough. There was more than enough talent on that side of the ball to avoid the blowouts. IMO he has taken a solid group and turned it into a unit of confusion.

On offense, we've now had enough time to see Hunt and Allen against legit competition, and I'm back to thinking that we don't really have a viable D-1A QB on the roster this year. Any number of guys could be ready next year, but this year it's a total loss. Really disappointed with where we are talent-wise at that position, after 4 years of Marrone recruiting it. He might have put too much stock in NY guys.

Good post. The thing I can't fathom is the decision to go to a 3 -4. Just inexplicable...and to hear Shafer say postgame that they had a good plan? I mean...what???

Well he had Zachary Allen and then we lost him when he left for buffalo, people forget that. He and Hackett had their QB, but then they bolted. If they stay we are not talking about the QB position for the future anyway, I wonder if they would have went with Loeb, this year and then Allen next.

In some ways the roster was improved. At the QB and WR positions the team was not improved. The best players at that those positions were recruited by GROB.

Wake Forest and BC are by no means should wins at this point. BC played Clemson a lot closer than we did - and played Florida State very close, for that matter. Wake has wins against NC State, two cupcakes - the same as us - and just drubbed a 5-1 Maryland team.

Personally, I think 5-7 is the absolute best this team/staff can do after what I've seen the last three weeks - even the NC State win didn't have me feeling all warm and fuzzy. Would be thrilled if I'm proven wrong.

Not to drag this out too much further, but 110-17 in first halves of games against BCS opponents. That is what upsets me the most. We have been completely out of three games before they really even started. Early on with far less talent than we have now, Marrone's teams were in games - even against top-tier teams. Very rarely were we completely out of it by halftime.

Remember after Marrone's first season the OC, WR and DL coaches were let go. I'm not willing to bail on this season yet - still a long way to go. But if certain aspects of the team continue to go down the same path, it's going to be very interesting to see if Shafer has the guts to let go his coaching buddies.

I agree with you, but the difference is that now we are in the ACC. Our margin of error is a lot less in this conference than in the Big East.

I think we'll see a better team as we move forward. I think our OC will get better. Very concerned about our DC.

Maybe I'm most concerned with the guy who does the scheduling.

Don't forget that NC state was playing w/ a backup QB and many other injuries

I love seeing people talk about "should win" games after we've played like poop nearly all season.

Wake up - we are on the bottom rung of this conference. We are the "should wins" for everyone - not the other way around until proven otherwise.

everyone is banged up, we went on the road and won the game. Doesn't matter who was there, we won who they put infront of us.

Despite all of our issues and problems we still have an ability/hope to get to 6 and that's where i'm at with this. Its a push to 6. Scrap, scrape, crawl your way to 6. Whatever, whoever has to do what they have to do just get to 6 and go from there.

If we win another game that will be gravy. I thought Duke was the pits coming into this season and right nowI think they'd beat us ... Close, but they would. I think there needs to be some new goals set for this season, like remaining competitive and playing mistake free football, and then assess staff and players based on that at the end of the season.

NC State lost to Clemson by 12 with the same backup QB.

I wouldn't feel too good about our chances if we didn't have Wake, Pitt and BC at home.

Stop it. WF and BC were two of the worst teams in BCS conferences last year. They have improved, and SU has regressed, but the gap hasn't closed, let alone either of those programs passing us, and the games are at home.

1-85 SU is better than either one of those teams.

and Maryland who lost there best 2 wr's yesterday

Our defense is going to eat Pitt's line alive. Savage is getting savaged.

Boston College is a running team and we are good against the run (just not the triple option, apparently).

Wake Forest is a toss up.

Maryland's best WR is out for the year.

Jerome and Prince are still very, very good.

I'm not saying we win all those games - but you guys need to see beyond the stink of the last game.

???? I don't get it. We were told for years the ACC sucked. This board had little to no respect for the ACC for a long time.

FWIW, I agree with you. The BE was awful with the exception of WVU and Louisville once and awhile.

The thing I've noticed on D is we never come out of the gate very strong (not counting SB). But up until GT, Bullough has made some nice halftime adjustments. That leads me to believe that game-planning is an issue on that side of the ball. From quotes from players / coaches, it sounds like we keep outsmarting ourselves. The thing I have always like about Shaf's defenses is they attack and try to dictate what the offense does. Bullough has been very aggressive at times but I also feel like we letting the offense dictate what we do on defense a little too much.

On offense, I've noticed we don't have any WRs and our QB is a work in progress. I like Terrell and I think he can be a serviceable QB here... I'm very concerned with how horrible he's doing against BCS competition, though.

I'm prepared to be patient. I think Shaf and the team deserve it.

As you know, this is not just about 1-85. It's what the coaching staff is doing with those players.

Addazio has been doing a pretty good job with his 1-85, coaching them up pretty well. The buffoonery we have witnessed in defensive game planning and offensive execution could definitely cost us vs BC. Wake, doubtful, I agree.

I never really worry about games in the future other than the next one. I laugh to myself whenever I read or hear somebody say this game is a win or loss...it's played on the field each week and each week brings its own dynamics such as injuries/turnovers/refs/improvement/or many other factors. Who thought Maryland would lose two WR's? So now we know they did, how good are the backup's? Will they change their schemes now to adapt to those losses? Just too many things out there and until it's gameday, they are just guesses and/or emotions swaying the decision.

Just have to take care of the business that is directly in front and right now that business is Wake Forrest. Looking ahead at this game or that game is something I suppose a lot of fans do while trying to compile a future W/L record and so many times I've read...this is an easy win or definite loss only to change 1 to 5 weeks later. I just hope to god the players are not doing this as well.

Everything in sports is cyclical. The ACC was down for a bit and is back to having 3 top 10 teams, 4 top 15.

The SEC is down a bit this year but the pollsters keep them in it. Bama is gifted the NC game unless they screw up, LSU is LSU which is strong D + ? every year. Mizzou has made a meteoric rise through the rankings solely on the premise of being in the SEC. If they were still B12 they'd be ranked about 15th right now. PAC12 had USC fall off, Oregon as the bread winner and Stanford as a clear #2 team. Behind that UW is trying to take USC's place but not quite there yet. End game, they only ever have 3 good teams in a given year. B1G is OSU and everyone else. They recruit well but it doesn't really translate to on field performance. BEVO is a cluster with no solid defenses. They look like the 90s/early 2000's PAC10 at the moment.

Arguement can be made that the ACC is the strongest conference top to bottom this year and may be for the forseeable future.
