I think this year we are going to see a good amount of true freshman playing. A lot can still change from now until Fall camp, but it's never to early to speculate...

AJ Long - Redshirt
Alin Edouard - Redshirt
Erv Phillips - Plays
KJ Williams - Plays
Steve Ishmael - Plays
Corey Cooper - Plays
Jamal Custis - Plays
Denzel Ward (?) - Plays
Aaron Roberts - Redshirt
Chris Slayton - Redshirt
Wayne Williams - Plays
Colton Moskal - Plays
Zaire Franklin - Plays
Jonathan Thomas (?) - Redshirt
PJ Bennett - Redhsirt
Lamar Dawson - Grayshirt
Juwan Dowels - Plays
Rodney Williams - Redshirt
Naes Howard - Redshirt
Trevon Prater - Redshirt

That's not to mention I think 1 each of the DT's, and CB's that we are still recruiting will end up playing

A couple things stand out, mainly the amount of WR's we will have active. There has to be some sort of shake up here, and I can't see any of the Freshman not playing this year/

Thoughts?

Nice list.

I would add to the redshirts:

Erv - Have depth at RB and he could add some size.
Moskol - LB's are not as deep as RB's, but no need to rush a true freshman. He can add size too.
One of Williams, Custis, or Ishmael. Think they all good be good, but we've got numbers here, especially with the young guys.

Think the staff will redshirt everywhere they think we don't need immediate help.

Do you think we only take 20?

Right now we can only take 21 players to stay below the 85 player cap.

If Dawson delays his enrollment until he's healthy next January, there's room for one more.

To take more than 21-22, there would have to be a few commits who don't qualify, or a few existing players who leave.

It could happen.

Anyone have thoughts on that DE Clark for a greyshirt?

no i am thinking 24-25.

adding to that list would be

Jalen Harvery
Kayton Samuels
Trumaine Washington
Antwan Cordy

Steve Ishmael - Plays (offense)
Corey Cooper - Plays (offense)
Wayne Williams – Plays (defense)
Juwan Dowels - Plays (defense)
Zaire Franklin – Plays (specials)
Jonathan Thomas (?) - Plays (specials)

Rodney Williams - Redshirt
Naes Howard - Redshirt
Trevon Prater – Redshirt
Lamar Dawson - defers enrollment

If Wayne Williams had a redshirt year I'd say he might redshirt, but with 2 to play 2 (if i'm not mistaken) he definitely will see the field unless he's just that out of shape.

Out of all the LBers imo Moskal is the only definite not to RS. Franklin was recruited as a WILL, while Moskal a MIKE. The MIKE spot is up for grabs. Moskal has already bulked up to 225, and imo is one of the best prospects in the entire class, and a serious contender for the job, at worst back up. I know the staff absolutely loves him as well (i'm sure you can say that about everyone, but have heard especially good things on him).

Unfortunately it looks like we will have 3 or 4 cases of all of the above

Clifton Smith was our last (and maybe only) true freshman starter at the MIKE and he was a top 100 recruit. He also had a so-so year. MIKE has to be the toughest defensive position for a true frosh. I think he'll be 3rd maybe 4th option. If he's physically ready it's going to come down to how smart he is.

He could play specials, that's where these kids are more apt to get run.

I really liked Clark, but we just have too many DE's. He was most likely a backup option for Slayton. Too bad I think the kid has serious talent.

i am a HUGE fan of Moskal. He was considering Yale so we know he is extremely smart. He has also bulked up to 225lb already. Other then Luke A, and Hodge who do you have ahead of him?

Also Ward has been told he won't redshirt. He wouldn't come here if he had to

Jonathan Thomas has only played 2 years of football. He can probably bulk up to 235 without losing any speed. i'd be shocked if he didn't redshirt

No way all 4 WR's play as true frosh. I think Cooper definitely plays, then I think one of the others will win a job in the summer and ease into a bigger role as the season wears on. I mean, if all 4 WR play, what roles do Broyld, Estime, West have (not even getting into some of the others who played last year)?

Think we will try to redshirt Erv. Think Ward will redshirt.

Outside of that, I personally think Thomas would be the guy who plays right away on specials. I anticipate Moskal and Franklin redshirting if Arciniega is good to go.

Dowels plays if he makes it. I also wouldn't be surprised to see R. Williams, Howard or Prater play depending on who is best in the fall.

For me, I think the guys playing right away are Cooper, K.J. Williams, W. Williams, Thomas, Dowels and one of the other DB's (Tru).

playing Ward a few snaps is a colossal waste and unless Hickey gets hurt that's all he's going to play. I think promises will change when he's going against Welsh, Robinson, Trejo, Thompson, Johnson et al in practice every day in August. Promising playing time is bad business imho, promising a chance is another story.

I think they'd move Lynch to the middle if they had to.

Thomas looks like an unbelievable talent. If he qualifies i think it'd be hard to keep him off specials - kick coverage team, same path as Hodge.

I think it will play out like this

1) AJ Long - Redshirt
2) Alin Edouard - Redshirt
3) Erv Phillips - Redshirt (but will play if depth becomes a concern)
4) KJ Williams - Redshirt
5) Corey Cooper - Plays
6) Jamal Custis - Redshirt
7) Aaron Roberts - Redshirt
8) Chris Slayton - Redshirt
9) Wayne Williams - Plays
10) Colton Moskal - Plays
11) Zaire Franklin - Plays
12) Parris Bennett - Redshirt
13) Lamar Dawson - Grayshirt
14) Juwan Dowels - Plays
15) Rodney Williams - Redshirt
16) Naes Howard - Redshirt
17) Trevon Prater - Redshirt

Non-Committed but probable
18) Denzel Ward - Redshirt (like Erv wil play if depth becomes a concern)
19) Steve Ishmael - Plays
20) Kayton Samuels - Redshirt
21) Jalen Harvey - Plays
22) Antwan Cordy - Redshirt
23) Trumaine Washington - Plays
24) Jonathan Thomas - Plays

I'm thinking 8 or 9 definitely see the field.

If these receivers are better then the current ones i believe they play. Cooper went prep so he will definitely play. I know Ishmael isn't redshirting, and can you redshirt a 4 star recruit, who is already physically developed? Same can be said for Custis.

Right now the returning wr's that will play are

West
Broyld
Estime
Cornelius

Who after them? It was clear the staff wanted to upgrade the position, i wouldn't be shocked to see them all play.

I also know Ward has been told he will not redshirt. That was contingent about him coming here

I agree, but his recruiting pitch was come here and your 2nd team behind Hickey, and a 3 year starter. Hopefully Hickey takes every snap, and he isn't forced into playing.

I also think the talent is there where we wouldn't need to move guys around. I'd like to see Cam stay outside where he is one of our better blitzers. Moskal is already bigger then he is now.

I think Funderburke, who is the most talented of all of them, will get substantial time if he keeps up with his off the field stuff. Also can't forget about Winfield.

I do think part of it was upgrading the position, but the other part was to be ready for a spread them out offense in a few years.

If Broyld, Estime and Funderburke all improve this offseason, the WR corp will be fine (West is what he is). If all 3 stay where they were, then I think Cooper, K.J. Williams and Ishmael all will factor in. But, I think our WR will improve enough to allow us to save a guy like Ishmael or K.J. with a redshirt year for them to explode onto the scene when replacing West and Funderburke next year.

If the staff is promising Ward no redshirt, he better be starting to make it useful. So, IMO, that would mean the staff doesn't have faith in Emerich at C and would move Trudo to C, Foy to G and start Ward at RT. I think they have told Ward no redshirt, but he may ask for one once fall is complete. Who was our last true frosh OL to play, Macky on specials?

Preferred walk-on academic schollie? Lol. Numbers are numbers.

Erv won't play unless there are injuries.. SU has 3 capable RBs in a timeshare next season and maybe 4 if Moore can shape up.

we played 4 Rb at tailback last year and Smith was the work horse.. Why would only play 3 this year if we have 4 who are ready. I think Morris becomes the starter, Gulley the #2 and the first 3rd down guy, that leaves devante getting more run at both spots. if Erv is ready he plays cause depth is only a play away from no backup at either spot.. Unless they try to run Moore at the TB spot as the power back and the 4th back to play..

we dont have a ton of Depth as many think many teams with 4 rb's have issues needing 5-6.

I agree with Funderburke. Talent isn't what kept him off the field last season. Little bit of playbook, with a little bit of Marcus Salesitis mixed in. Plus being ineligible the Spring semester didn't help. I really hope he gets it's all together because he could be a game changer. I guess 1 of the 4 freshman WR's will have to redshirt, but I know for a fact Ishmael won't be the 1. I'd have to guess Custis.

I also don't see anyone on the offensive line switching positions. Emerich has been groomed to take over for Mackey for 2 seasons. There will be blow outs, Hickey won't play the entire game, plus injuries, etc.
