Opinions on Who Redshirts/Who Doesn't

With what seems to be more depth at WR, it might make sense to use those guys on returns more. I assume Estime is going to be the main KR/PR, and it would be good to keep PTG and Morris out of the KR rotation.

Anyone heard anything about Hale sticking around or not? Could also see Kobena being on the graduate and go FCS route, but he might need the Fall to complete his degree.

Obviously. I don't think anyone disagrees with this and no one is saying anything to the contrary. But most of these players will not be better as Freshman than the upperclassman. Sure they may be a higher level of recruits but they are still too green. They won't know the play book as well, won't know how to run the routes as well, won't have as good of technique, experience against good corners, chemistry with qb's etc. It takes time.

For expample Lemon was so so his freshman season, mediocre his sophomore season, pretty good his junior year and really good his senior year. Sales didn't do much at all until the end of his Junior year and was pretty darn good his senior year. And we didn't have too much else as far as wide receivers go those years. People don't factor in how long it often takes to develop and how much is benefited by having a more experienced QB. Our guys last year had pretty raw QB play.

Yes but Sales and Lemon didn't have the talent coming in at WR that we do now. Sales might never have been given another chance if we had the incoming talent "ON PAPER" than we do this season. I don't think we have ever had this kind of talent for an incoming WR class ever. If they pick up the play book fast there could be some real sad upper class guys. I don't see Cooper or Ish sitting out there freshman year. I am also having a hard time seeing KJ sitting over the product I saw on the field last year. Custis is up in the air for me not sure about him I could see a redshirt there. But the other 3 I just have a hard time seeing it based on what I saw on the field last year.

Kobena is a true junior so, more than likely he won't graduate any time soon. My guess is he'll be used on special teams in a capacity that doesn't involve handling the ball, i.e. coverage and/or blocking assignments.

Actually, Sales and Lemon had as much talent as the prospects we are now recruiting. Sales was a 4 star (albeit from Central NY) and Lemon put up outstanding receiving numbers in his junior and senior years in HS.

Both played as frosh in their respective first years and contributed -- 25 or 30 catches.
If any of the in-coming frosh do as well in 2014, it would be a big boost to the offense. The difference is that SU has deeper numbers in the WR ranks now, as compared with the frosh years of Sales & Lemon. How much talent we have in the numbers -- well, have to wait until Spring practice to see what Cooper, Winfield and others can actually do.

Call me crazy but what do you guys think the chances are of any of the current WR moving to corner? I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often given that the desired physical attributes are virtually identical and the skill sets have a lot of overlap...but what do I know?

Just for the record, I think it's too late in his career but I think Kobena would have made a hell of a corner.

Kobena is way to stiff to play corner. He runs like a sprinter, straight a head, he has zero change direction ability.

Sales was a consensus 4 star player out of high school.

Custis is the best of the wrs SU is bringing in. I'm confident that he and Ismael will play next year. Ismael is physically ready and has a very mature game. Played in a very complex offense in HS.

Agreed. I simply think his speed and physicality give him the raw attributes, I think he also anticipates and plays the ball well although his hands have been inconsistent at best. I agree in terms of his feet and his hips and that's why I said I thought it was too late. What's your take on if those can be taught and how long for an athletic guy that has the right movement skills to pick up or adjust to playing turned around vs playing receiver?

I could see a couple wr's going elsewhere that were on the team since they will be told you are not likely to play much at all and it would help us as it seems we are looking at 24 or 25 commits which means 2 or 3 non qualified/transfer and 1 gray shirting until January while his body recovers(dawson)

kobena, hale and lewis seem like guys who could be candidates to transfer or change positions

Steve Gregory played a year at WR, we were so thin at the position when he was here. I think it was his junker year. His career has worked out pretty well in the NFL.
