Orange Bowl

Don't think it works that way. Its typically going to be 2nd or 3rd.

Then where are the B1G/SEC team going to go when the Rose Bowl/Champions Bowl are hosting on alternate years? There is NO WAY the SEC/B1G is sending them to an access bowl over the OB.

I'm pretty sure we will only get hosed when the OB hosts. Then we will play in an access bowl against #2 picks/at larges.

This is a good deal for the ACC but a huge deal for the B1G and SEC. Think about it. ACC will get money from OB every year and playoff when qualified. B1G and SEC will get money from thier bowls every year, playoff when qualifed and now they have a chance to go to another big money bowl. When all 3 bowls line up the B1G and SEC will have a huge payout.

No. There are two parts of the OB payout: when it is hosting, and when it is not hosting. This is why it's such a win for the ACC. In order for the OB to attract the SEC/B1G, it only has to pay as much as the next higher bid (i.e. the Access bowls). Since the access bowls never host, they only get the non-hosting payout. This means that to stay competitive, the OB only needs split the non-hosting part of the payout. Also, since the access bowl payout are going to be pooled and then evenly divided, the very big names are going to subsidize the lesser known names. In other words, some of the revenue generated from teams like UF will go to cover teams like TCU and BSU. The OB has the luxury of not blindly taking anyone who finishes in the top (insert number here), because it can exclusively contract with conferences that tend to have good teams and huge fan bases (i.e. SEC, B1G, and ND). This distinction between the OB and access bowls means that the non-hosting aspect of the OB is worth more than the non-hosting aspect of the access bowls. The beautiful thing about the OB’s non hosting value exceeding access bowl’s non-hosting value is that, without dividing the money that the OB makes from hosting, the OB can offer a higher payout, a more prestigious game, and a better opponent than the access bowls.

If the OB is worth $80 million/yr, and $40 million/yr is from hosting, and $40 million is from not hosting, then, most years, the ACC could keep $40 million/yr from hosting, and split the remaining $40 million 45-45-10, and the ACC could keep $18 million/yr, the SEC/B1G could keep $18 million/yr, and ND could make $4 million/yr for being ND.

This would make the total SEC payout equal $40 million from the Champions Bowl* + $18 million from the OB (once every 3 years), totaling a guaranteed $46 million/yr

*Assuming boththe the SEC and the Big XII make $40 million/yr from the Champions Bowl

This would make the total B1G payout equal $40 million from the Rose Bowl + $18 million from the OB (once every 3 years), totaling a guaranteed $46 million/yr

The Big XII* and the Pac would make $40 million from their contract bowl and another $15 from an access bowl every 3 years (when the Rose/Champions Bowl is hosting), making their total yearly guaranteed payout $45 million/yr, assuming that access bowls will have a payout of around $15 million.

And, this would make the ACC payout $58 million plus its cut of an access bowl every 3 years. Assuming that an access bowl will be worth around $15 million, then the ACC would make a guaranteed $63 million/yr.

**These numbers are made up and for demonstration purposes, AND this is just guaranteed money from contract bowls. Since the B1G, and the SEC will likely send teams to access bowls and the football four, their nonguaranteed payout will likely be substantial, and will almost certainly more than close the gap between them and the ACC.

In short, the B1G and the SEC win, but the ACC wins BIG. However, since the SEC will likely send half its conference to the “football Four,” access bowls, and their contract bowl (Champions/Orange Bowl), they will have the highest payout, just not the highest payout per skilled team. That distinction will go to the ACC.
