As some point of reference (but possibly irrelevant), the NHL in 1983 suspended Tom Lysiak 20 games for tripping a referee. This was at a time in the NHL that you could rape and murder an opponent and get a slap in the wrist.

I thought 4 was a bit light.

Interesting... it seems a few of the officials that have called our games were tripping during the games on account of the lack of some calls and the calling of some which were "phantom" in nature. No one even needed stick a leg out either.
