Does anyone else think the University should add a baseball team? We are the only team in the ACC without one and baseball is still a highly watched sport. I am all for adding a baseball team here at Syracuse.

Title 9 issues, doubt it ever happens. Lacrosse is Syracuse's spring sport and that's never going to change.

If you add 11.7 Men's Baseball scholarships, you have to maintain Title IX balance.

Which Men's sport would you like to get rid of?

-or-

Which Women's sport would you like to add?

How do the other ACC schools handle that balance? Are we sure that title IX is the real issue? It appears that Virginia sponsors only one more women's sport than men's sports while we sponsor 4 more women's teams than men. How can the Title IX numbers work for them and their baseball team and not for us ? Could it just be a financial support issue?

Keep in mind a lot of these schools have had a baseball team for years so when title 9 first became an issue having a baseball team was already factored in and they made the numbers work with/around them. There are many ACC schools who only have a baseball team, there's only 5 lax schools out of a large conference. Your questions are the same ones that lacrosse people are asking about schools especially in the south and west about adding Div 1 lax. Schools like Georgia, GA Tech, VA Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, FSU, Miami, USC, Cal, WSU, etc all dont have Div 1 lax teams with title 9 being one of if not the main reason.

A lot of schools add random sports - bowling is always my favorite. Start a crew team - have them row around Onondoga Lake.

We'd need a brand new pool. That 25 meter bathtub at Archbold is kind of outdated.

Some of our posters have better pools in their backyards. :D
Exactly.

I think we can afford a new pool and a dozen swimmers.

Uh, we have a crew team. Both men's and women's

Really? Huh. Well done, SU!!!!

lol

Let's add softball!

Eliminate Men's Crew!

Which women's sport do the other ACC schools have? They found a way to make it balance.

Not Sure if serious.jpg

Maybe my sarcasm meter is on the fritz. We've had a softball team since 2000.

Fencing seems easy enough to add. Buy some pads, borrow some mats from the cheerleaders, and get some metal sticks. Boom, fencing team.

5 Fencing and 6 Golf scholarships would just about balance out Baseball.

SU does own a golf course. And part of it is still above water.

JB could become the golf coach so he has something to keep himself busy after retiring from coaching bball. It's perfect.

A point I'd like to bring up, though, is the Chiefs average like 6 fans per game. I'm not sure if Syracuse has the fans to support a team.

Yeah, I'm still a little surprised that team hasn't moved south by now.

The bigger problem would be the fact that ACC schools are in warm weather climates for the most part and spring time in CNY starts around June

title ix is not the issue, money is. you could self fund the sport and the title ix is not an issue but you still need money for the womans side.

You don't worry about fan support for non revenue sports. Baseball would be a non revenue sport at most schools, and certainly at Syracuse.

And we would likely never be competitive with the majority of the existing ACC programs.

Syracuse University did play baseball once upon a time and produced two pretty good major league pitchers (Jim Konstanty and Dave Giusti).
