My beloved Cuse family . . . when my niece was accepted into SU's grad program for social work, I knew just who to turn to for assistance in trying to find her an apartment or efficiency. She begins the summer session July 1st (just graduated undergrad this past weekend!!). In any event, I'm here in Miami, and although I've researched the net, I'm hoping someone can personally offer some locations for her. She will be living alone so safety is a concern. She would prefer a commute less than 1/2 hour, yet in a suburb where she could find a little part time job. She's very motivated . . . internship, school and a job - I'm so glad those days are behind me!!

If you could kindly PM me with your suggestions I would truly be grateful.

Destiny is the biggest job source in Syracuse right now. She should look in the traditional areas around the University and also I suggest branching out to Liverpool. Lots of new lofts being built.

Note sure if this will be ready in time...but it looks cool. It is located downtown kinda near Dinosaur BBQ. A very vibrant area with Armory Square a few blocks away.

Liverpool, Jamesville, Dewitt, Cicero, and most of N. Syracuse are all decent suburbs and close to SU.

Strathmore, Tipperary Hill and Sedgwick areas are the safest areas in the city. Most of the suburbs are within a 30 minute commute. If you or your niece are on facebook, I know that the Strathmore and Tipp Hill communities have active facebook pages. Often people post on both of them asking about available apartments. Good luck and hope your niece enjoys her time here.

Carriage house east in manlius are nice too, crystal tree apartments in Fayetteville is right next to green lakes

This isn't quite what you asked for, I know, but having spent a few recent years as a graduate student at SU, I'd recommend following up on Mark's links. There are tons of part-time service jobs (from Starbucks to Westcott to career-related opportunities) very close by; as a student, there's not a ton of appeal to driving around the area from some suburb to come to the Hill every day.

The Creekwalk building or Campus West are new and convenient, if pricey. Look at the orangehousing properties before signing a lease, if possible.

One of my brother's best friends lives in the Tipp Hill area and I think he actually leases out apartments. I can probably pass along his information if he still does that.

Cannot begin to thank you enough!! I just forwarded all of your amazing info to my niece!!

She might not tell you...but if she likes to enjoy the social scene...the closer to Westcott Ave or Armory Sq/Downtown the better.

My daughter just graduated from ESF and spent all but her freshman year off campus. She had good luck with http://www.orangehousing.com/. Also, the Alibrandi Center (Catholic Newman center) has housing for about $500 per month. It is right on Walnut Street walking distance to SU campus, http://www.stthomasmoreatsu.org/.

Finally, check with property mgmt. companies like Longley Jones or Sutton Realty. They have a portfolio of housing in a wide range of prices in Syracuse and the surrounding suburbs.
