It seemed to come down to one choice: Jimmy vs. Eli

One of them was not going to survive. If you noticed Jimmy said it was Eli's idea to kill Nucky and Eli said it was Jimmy's. It basically came down to Nucky choosing family, even though it turns out that it was Eli's idea and he was the one who pushed to have Nucky killed. Wouldn't surprise me if this eventually plays/comes out later with Nucky regretting his decision.

Why was Nucky able to forgive Rothstein in season 1 and his brother in season 2 but not Jimmy who is like family in season 2?

I was disappointed that Nucky did not kill his brother Eli as well. Eli's betrayal was just as big if not bigger than Jimmy's.

Eli will take the fall for Nucky. I wouldn't be surprised if Eli gets "the chair," even though Nucky promised him no more than two years.

I doubt Eli will get the chair. Eli is taking the fall for the election tampering. The deputy, Halloran I think was his name, was thrown under the bus for the murder. You will see Eli next season, as Nucky said Eli will probably only do a year and they are advancing the timeline by about a year and a half.

Why was Nucky able to forgive Rothstein in season 1 and his brother in season 2 but not Jimmy who is like family in season 2?

Rothstein for money/business reasons. Eli for family reasons. Jimmy was "like" family, but still not family. Also, I think Nucky thought of Jimmy like a son and the betrayal was worse than a busness partner, Rothstein, and Eli, brother.

Ultimately all of Nucky's decisions are business/money related. By keeping Eli, he has control still over the police. With Rothstein he has the NY connection and also helps with the Philly and Chicago connection. If he kept Jimmy and got rid of the butcher, forget his name, he would hurt a potential Philly connection. Keeping Jimmy would not help him at all when it comes to business/money.

Jimmy was damaged goods. His wife was killed, he killed his father, his mother is nuts, he still hasn't recovered from the war, he's sidearm is a guy with half a face...he already betrayed him MULTIPLE times (Leaving princeton, Robbing the trucks w/ capone, helping his father). Nucky had no choice.

Speaking of Harrow .. wonder what role he is going to have going forward. He is one of the more interesting characters on the show.

Yes but Richard was loyal. One of my favorite characters. He probably won't be around in season 3 I'm guessing. His mother is nuts but Gretchen Mol is HOT!

Rothstein was a business decision. Jimmy didn't have the same power base (yet). Nuck gave a clue a couple of weeks back when he said blood is always thicker than water. Jimmy was like family, but not family...I don't think Eli is off the hook that easily.

He's loyal to JIMMY...to Nucky, he's a guy who has half of a face, is 'ed up over the war, and just sided w/ Jimmy in the coup attempt

They already said Richard will be back. I expect him and crazy mom to team up and plot revenge. My guess? Crazy Mom shacks up w/ Luciano again and the Lansky, Luciano, Siegal trio rise up.

Yes per the director Richard will be back and also theres going to be a new young character introduced into the story. To soon for Jimmy's son so I am not sure where this character is coming from. I have heard that theres been a lot of backlash over Jimmy's death more then the director and HBO anticipated. Not sure if they try to go in a direction that allows Jimmy to somehow come back on the show. Would be hard pressed to have him survive a shot to the head, maybe a dream sequence or some other craziness.
