OT: Brittney Griner...

Agreed. I've literally never heard anything about her that was polarizing or controversial. She came out and said she was a lesbian and noone even thought twice about it. Am I missing something?

Si

I think there were a lot of folks who heard her voice and thought she was actually a man. Which is just sad for those folks who thought that. But I can't remember any other 'controversy.'

Unless you and your buddies were all former Div. I men's basketball athletes (or higher) with a lot of practice together running plays, I think you would get demolished. I would put money on it.

Disagree. I went to UConn for graduate school and was friends with a few of the women on the team. We played pickup games many times over the summer. I was a good basketball player - but a better athlete, with an excellent vertical and quite fast. I had no problems with the women and was better than any of them by a wide margin.

For context: I couldn't come close to cracking the walk on squad as an undergraduate at Syracuse. I had the pleasure of playing against John Wallace a few times, so I know what it feels like to play against a truly elite, NBA-level talent.

Playing against the UConn women - they were certainly skilled and tough - was like playing against high-schoolers again. There's just too much of a delta in terms of explosive athleticism. Basketball is so dependent on athleticism that suggesting female players would be competitive with males (either peers or even a couple of levels below) is ludicrous.

Didn't she punch someone in a game a couple years back? Could be thinking of someone else.

Didn't Mark Cuban say he was going to have her work out or play summer ball with the Mavs this summer?

That incident is covered in the ESPN Magazine article I linked. It occurred when she was a freshman and two players "got tangled in the post." There was never another inciddent.

as rizingShe is polarizing? Controversial?

I'm not the biggest womens basketball fan - but i have NEVER heard those described with Griner. Especially to the point of being the most polarizing in sports.

maybe i live under a rock.
Just google her name and controversial and polarizing. She didn't make many fans her freshman year and its carried over to some extent. And with the comments Mark Cuban has made it even harder for her to become mainstream and not a sideshow performer. Just let her be the best player in the wnba and win some more gold medals and she'll be just fine.

I don't know. If I have to google to understand someone is polarizing/controversial, they probably aren't that polarizing/controversial.

I don't want to make it seem like I'm disrespecting women or women's athletes, because that's not what I'm about at all. But in all reality, the average WNBA player is probably on par with the average Division 3 (maybe Division 2 in some instances) men's player.

The greatest women's player of all-time (Cheryl Miller) wouldn't have a chance 1 on 1 against someone like Brandon Triche.

Agreed. Remember like 10-15 years ago when SI ran a piece about how Pat Summitt had guys come in and practice against her teams, but the rules were that 1) they could not be better than a D3 talent, and 2) they were not allowed to play "above the rim" (as in, they could basically just shoot jumpers), and the article mentioned that the ragtag team of D3 talents would consistently win the scrimmages?

The best D3 team would beat a WNBA team. There is absolutely zero question in my mind. I work in D3 athletics so I've seen some very, very good players at this level. The physical difference between even D3 athletes and top notch female athletes is just night and day.

I posted a video of that incident last night but I think it may have accidentally been deleted. I would say it was far from two players getting tangled up in the post. If a male player threw a sucker punch like that, it would follow them for a long time.

I wasn't trying to hijack the thread, just responding to the poster that said that anyone who hates on her must be homophobic.

I think you have to realize the context of that she's the best womens player and that at least half of the people here have never seen her play but could still tell you at least one fact about her. Not to change the topic but an article came out maybe ten years ago on the ten most hated professional athletes. I think the first four were Kobe, Barry Bonds, Curt Schilling and Terrell Owens. Number five was Mike Iaconelli a fisherman. 99.9 percent of people never heard of him but he was still number five most hated.

Heck I didn't even know she was gay, who cares really to each there own. I see her play bball on TV so I evaluate her as a bball player thats all I really know. I don't watch much woman's hoops although I probably should since it seems to be a better and better product every time I do watch.

Reminds me of the Williams sisters. They might be the greatest women tennis players of all time. They made comments about being able to beat professional male players ranked below 200. At the Australian one year they took on a 30 year old guy who was ranked 203rd in the word. He beat one of them 6-2 and the other 6-1. I doubt they could have beaten the top male college players either. There simply is too big a gap between male and female athleticism.

I don't think it's disrespectful to say that. I'd actually be surprised if a WNBA team could hang with a D3 men's basketball team. The US Women's National Team regularly plays U-15 and u-17 boys teams in the run-ups to the World Cup and other major tournaments. Normally, the women get handled pretty easily.

It's just the way that the human body works.

Really, Women's basketball is awful to watch. I think the questions about Britney revolve around her physical prowess compared to other women.

To be fair men's college basketball has become awful to watch when Syracise isn't playing because of the physicality and the lack of competent refereeing. While I don't watch a lot of women's hoops it is played at a good level. The problem with women's hoops is that there is a lack of depth. While their is more parity than ever in the tournament the same 10 teams are dominant year in and year our UConn, Stanford, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Baylor, Duke, Maryland. Louisville has made to Cinderella runs to the Championship game two times and has been curb stomped by UConn both times. Also, the 1-16 matchups in the women's tournament are just so horribly one sided unlike the men's game where the 16 seeds lose by 25 to 30. I like the fact the women stay four years and develop, but in the men's game early entry has caused the game to become a crapshoot and don't get me started on men's refs.

Yeah, it's not sexist or anything, it's just science - the male body is more physically dominant than the female body. It's nature. Men will always be bigger, stronger, and faster, so of COURSE even the most elite female athletes will be outclassed against good male athletes. I mentioned I work at a D3 school, we have a pretty good women's soccer program but our men's basketball team regularly plays them in intramurals or just for fun and absolutely destroys them despite the fact that most of our men's basketball players have played only a limited amount of soccer in their lives. They are just so much better physically that they make up for technical lacking.

(I got the info on their soccer matches from my intern for 3 years, who was a men's basketball player who was 6-6 and a point forward, who could have walked on to a lot of D1 programs, to give you an idea of the talent and physical level of the guys at my school)

Not to be mean but I would really like to see an examination of her DNA structure I suspect there is an abnormality leading her to have the deep voice and to appear to have a small Adams apple.

I think you guys are selling some of these women short. Here is an excerpt from an espn article about how a woman player would practice with the Fordham mens team and more than held her own. The denzel referred to is none other than denzel washington who played for a while at Fordham.

Kevin Carlesimo: "One story I think I have right: We were playing a pickup game in the gym one afternoon, and the women’s coach came up to me and said, “A friend of mine is here, do you mind if she plays pickup with you?" I said, "Sure." Denzel was there, and another scholarship guy. We were probably playing 3-on-3 and in one of the games, he was matched up with her. She could play. Nobody knew who she was except me. She was strong enough to play with guys, and she’ll score. She scored a lot of points, and I went over to Denzel afterward and explained to him it was Carol Blazejowski who played at Montclair State and went on to hold the Garden single-game scoring record [and the Olympics and become the general manager of the New York Liberty]. She would be good enough to play with most guys who weren’t that big. I was trying to offer some consolation. He may not remember that story, and Blaze might never have known that turned out to be Denzel [when asked, Blazejowski said she recalled playing pickup ball many times on Fordham’s Rose Hill campus but didn’t remember any specific players she played against], but it eased his mind a little bit when he understood who she was and how good she was. Blaze was legendary for her ability to score, and she could score against most people. "

Im still not convinced she isn't a man. I mean this respectfully, but we won't ever know for sure I guess

Today some girl set the national high school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.1. Just the other day some kid from Saratoga HS won the boys section 2 championship with a time of 1:56.2. There is no comparison between boys and girls. Brittney Griner might be the greatest women's player but no way she could she play against a men's professional team.

Yeah, Griner at best would be a decent men's D2 player. Probably more likely to be a good D3 player.

Just to put it in perspective, and this is referencing someone I know I probably shouldn't on a Syracuse board, but I grew up playing with Taylor Coppenrath, the former Vermont star. Vermont isn't exactly a power, but he's still playing professionally internationally. He would score 60 points on her, without question. She would never be able to hang with even a men's player at that level, let alone any "good" D1 talents.
