OT: Coach Cal

Like last year? Or the years they had the obviously most talented squad and couldn't get past the round of 16? Be honest you would absolutely slaughter JB for the same level of success with that much talent.

Cal? When has that happened? Last year for sure, didn't make the tournament. But he made the Elite 8 or better in 7 of the 8 years prior to that. In 2009, the year they lost in the Sweet 16, they lost to a really good Mizzou team. He doesn't have any history of early tournament flame outs as a favored team

Edit: Don't interpret that as me saying Cal is better than JB.

I may have been off , just pointing out that to Igor with the same talent anything less than a NC from JB would be a failure while he praises Cal. Cal is a great recruiter and salesman as well as a pretty good coach if he has the guys who fit his system.

Ithica, I agree they make the NCAA with Noel I actually thought he played pretty well and would have continued to improve.

Calipari teams never over achieve. They either achieve to the talent or under achieve.

We'll it is sort of hard to overachieve when you are ranked #1 preseason every single year.

Face it: Cal has "figured out" college basketball. He absolutely owns everyone else in terms of playing the game (meaning the entire gamut of things needed to make a successful program).

He is on a roll but it has also shown that no matter how good they are its pretty hard to win the whole thing relying soley on freshman. When they won they had two of the best freshman going MKG and Davis plus a stud freshman PG but also two very talented returning Sophs' plus a senior Miller off the bench who was played a huge role all season.

Last year his crop wasn't quite ready and didn't have the same help already in place plus NN went down which killed them. I think this season they are in better shape but sharing the ball and running their offense could take quite a while. Randle should get 20+ shots but I doubt he will.

I think there is risk to Cal's model. If he gets such loaded teams and they can't play together, and then bolt for the NBA anyway after their freshman year (like the kid at UCLA last year, who was supposed to be all world and didn't live up to it). This last team for Kentucky underachieved, and a bunch of them turned pro anyway.

If it's a completely revolving door and not enough guys hang around for year 2 or year 3, he may burn out on this model.

One can only hope it does.

I have a friend who is a huge KY fan (went to HS with Rex Chapman). She is a little troubled at the revolving door of players, and having to get to "learn" a whole new team every year. Just let Cal have a couple more NIT flame outs and then have another batch of 5 or 6 guys go pro after achieving NOTHING and maybe that culture will change a bit, and maybe he won't get 5 of the top 10 players every year.

That's true, but it's pretty hard to win the whole thing period. JB is an all time great coach, he's been coaching for 37 years, and he has one title and 4 final fours.

There is NO WAY UK misses the tourney if Noel doesn't go down. And perhaps they would have won a couple of games.

Ummm he also coached at UMass and Memphis.

Yes, but likely better than just an NIT squad.
They probably end make making the tournament when all is said and done, but they weren't a lock prior to Noel's injury.

I don't recall who said UK had great fans but they are dead wrong. I lived it for a few years in Louisville an 99% of them are obnoxious. A good 80% are white trash. I've been to a game at Rupp, sat mid court for a game the yr they had wall, cousins, jones an p-pat. The ppl directly behind us tried all game long to talk like gangsters. It was pretty funny for awhile but got annoying by the 2nd half. It's not limited to just their fan base for sure but they seem to have an abundance of them.

Fun Fact: Rupp Arena is in a shopping mall.

I find it amusing that Kentucky Basketball fans magically become Alabama football fans during the fall. Bunch of leaches who claim they "support the conference." This support magically disappears come basketball season.

And? What's the point? He was very successful at both of those places. I'm not saying I like the guy and I'm not saying he doesn't break rules. But none of that has stopped him from getting the top players and frankly his program has an outward perception of being cleaner than SU for the past 3 years. (Note: I said perception). He's playing the game and doing it well. Yeah the model is very high risk and last year he got bit, but honestly who's got a low risk path to the final four every year? Every team is vulnerable to injuries, freshman busts, etc.

Coach Cal is a master. I loved his UMass, Memphis teams and his Davis team was off the charts. A great coach and great recruiter who has brought a huge number of new fans to the game and increased exposure.

Even many of the locals here in the Boston area are UK fans .. annoys the heck out of me .. but it is what it is.

Is Cal an enormous douche? Yes, without a doubt.

Is Cal an excellent college basketball coach? Yes, without a doubt.

I've been to Rupp a bunch and I wouldn't call it a shopping mall since it doesn't have any real stores. It has a hotel attached, food court, UK gift shop, and an art gallery I think.

i drop money in the collection plate every Sunday and whisper softly "please GOD send him to jail".

When was the last time SU missed the NCAA tournament? 2006-07 and 07-08 and 2001-02 before that. That's three times in the last 12 seasons.

John Calipari at UK has every major tournament accolade that SU has had since 2001 (elite eight, final four and a championship) in just four years with the same rate of missing the NCAA tournament.

If the next SU coach starts bringing in the recruits like Calipari (with the results he gets on the court), will everyone start boycotting SU basketball and demand an investigation into the program?

Don't hate the player, hate the game.
