OT- ESPN suspends Bill Simmons 3 weeks

one of the comments stated...

Ray Rice gets two weeks initially ,Simmons gets three for speaking the truth

Good for BS. He's 100% right! IMO. Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining Roger. Total crap.

It's not about speaking the truth. He dared his employer to suspend him...try that one tomorrow in the office and see if you get 3 weeks paid vacation.

Agree he have them no choice. Either way he makes espn look like crap. He wants a rich daddy to take all the risk for him but wants to pretend like he's so independent

That's my problem....but my vacations have lasted much longer and I do enjoy every minute of them.

I used to love simmons when he was a nobody suffering red sox fan. Now hes just a big douche
Hey marsh is there any truth to the rumors that China has bought PBR beer

He's right about Goodell. Especially with the Sean Payton hypocrisy.

Having said that, he put the dare out there so now he better make good on it.

Good for Simmons. He's always at his best when the box is closing on him (getting shut out in Boston before going online, being stuck on page 2 before jumping to Grantland...)

He does not do well with strict constructs around him and that is when he is at his absolute best. He gets back to writing what made him so popular - the voice of the fan / common man / what you're talking about with your buddies at the bar.

I get that he may not be for everyone, but he is one of the most powerful talents in sports journalism, if not the most powerful.

I don't think this was planned. I think he's always had a stressful relationship with the WWL and it blows up from time to time.

Stephen A basically said that Janay Rice (and women in general) can bring on beatings and only got one week.

For Simmons to get three is a joke.

Disagree entirely -- he's saying what he feels and he knows, from experience, that it's likely to wrankle feathers at a network that cares much more about ratings (perhaps understandably) than ethics. I"m not a hate espn guy, but it's not like he just took a shot at espn for no reason, he knows how they're likely to respond to his saying what he feels.

Who wouldn't? Smart dude.

I don't even completely agree with the degree of vitriol (think it's crazy that people care as much about Goodell's role as the people actually beating women and kids), but the guy does editorials! If that's what he thinks, let it be and just put a tag on his stuff that he doesn't necessarily represent the opinion of espn.

Not really. Goodell held Payton accountable. The NFL owners haven't held Goodell accountable. It isn't Goodell's fault that the owners don't want to punish him. They are the ones in charge of punishing him for the wrong that he's done here, not himself. I understand the uproar with what is going on in the NFL and Goodell's perceived role in it, but this is one of many dumb arguments against him that people aren't really thinking through, much like the "Simmons suspended for 3 weeks while Ray Rice only gets 2?!" crap going around now, as if the NFL is the organization that suspended Simmons.

i guess i am in the minority.. have no idea who Bill Simmons is but to be honest i dont think that i could actually name more than handful of ESPN personalities off the top of my head. as much as i watch the show they are just voices who could leave tomorrow and it woulnt really change the image of the station. how many people do reporting now for them probably 200? and most of them are just hacks anyway.

This is another one of the arguments that annoys me... Stephen A's comments were taken so far out of context at this point that nobody remembers what he was actually saying. He was saying that we can't arrest and punish a guy for beating a woman if it hasn't happened yet, so the only thing that we can really do is to try to do whatever we can to prevent the situation from occurring in the first place, because once she's been beaten, the damage is already done. At the time, it was reported that Janay Rice basically went after Rice and was trying to beat him and that he acted out of self-defense. Trying to instigate a fight with someone that much larger than you (or really, with anybody) is obviously not very smart.

Now obviously, as the second video showed, that isn't how everything ended up playing out, and what Ray Rice did to her was beyond horrible, but at the time, that is not how it had been reported, and I think Stephen A Smith had a good point that people took out of context and bent his words into something that they were not.

Yep.

This makes me like him more. Good for Simmons.

i would take the money but I would be a little more likely to know where my bread is buttered. just say what you want to say about goodell and don't preemptively force ESPN's hand. keep your mouth shut about suspensions that haven't happened yet and if you get suspended, say something then

One of Rice's appeal claims is that the TMV video was doctored and didnt depict the full story. If true, that could be interesting.
