I think it's been misconstrued that Simmons was suspended for calling Goodell a liar. That is not what ESPN said in their statement; it's just what the rest of the media world ran with because they knew that would generate the most hits for their articles while at the same time making their biggest competitor look bad.
ESPN suspended him because while other writers at ESPN have reported on the NFL in a professional manner (using facts to trash the NFL rather than baseless opinions), Simmons did not, and he then went on to challenge his own bosses to do something about it, and so they did.
Tons of other people at ESPN have called Goodell a liar and have not been punished. The difference is that Simmons did it in an unprofessional way and then called out his bosses. THAT is why he was punished.
