OT: Goodbye, Mr. Chip

Not calling you out in particular because a ton of people have been saying it, but it's funny to see people come out of the woodwork to say this now after he was so successful his first two years. No doubt the wheels have come off this year, but his offense was pretty fantastic for the majority of his time as the Eagles' coach. Now people are coming out and saying "Once you realize they run the same couple plays over and over, it's not difficult to defend" as if it took them three years to $cout a team that only "runs a couple plays". It's just silly, and this is coming from someone that honestly wanted to see him fail.

At any rate, I suspect he'll be given serious consideration for the Tennessee Titans job this offseason if he's in fact fired.

So He was good for 2 years and then pro coordinators and players caught up to him. He's not good enough to sustain and he didn't adapt. Or what are the excuses for this year?

My guess is that's not really the case and it's simply that his team sucks this year (largely due to the personnel decisions that he himself made). I don't buy the idea that it took three years for teams to figure out that he runs the same few plays over and over. Defenses looked hopeless trying to stop him for two years and suddenly it just clicked for every defense in the league? I just don't buy it. I think he has a QB that's incapable of running his system, a RB that doesn't fit the system (which is hilarious because DeMarco is the exact type of runner that Chip wanted), and they have no WRs (again, all of this is basically attributable to Chip's personnel decisions). I think if he had simply carried over last year's roster, they're probably once again a top 5 offense.

Agreed. So many examples - Reid in Philly, Holmgren in Seattle, ...
The Tuna too? Can't remember. I do remember him saying " if you want me to cook the meal I should be able to buy the groceries", or something like that.

...and signing the dog fighter.

Eagles season ticket holder here. I loved Donovan but trading him was one of the few good moves the Eagles have made in the last 6-7 years. Donovan was toast by the time he left Philly. He had nothing left as was evidenced by his production in Washington and Minnesota. Andy Reid was flawed in some ways but one thing he knows something about is QBs. He made a great move drafting Donovan and a great move trading him.

...understood, but how did you feel when they signed Vick? Just curious because I have a South Jersey friend that cancelled her season tickets when they signed him.

Once again - bad quarterback play makes an NFL coach look inept. Crazy how that works.

Kelly shouldn't be GM but he's an excellent coach. Give him a decent quarterback and he would look like a genius. That's how it works in the NFL and one of the many reasons why the NFL sucks.

You can replace Chip all you want, but if you still don't have a quarterback in three years then you're just going to fire the next coach too.

If you put a horrible offensive line in front of any QB you'll have problems. I agree that the Birds need to address the QB position. Bradford has some talent but is injury prone and doesn't fit Kelly's offense. Sanchez is a barely adequate backup QB at best who is a TO machine. But the offensive line is the worst in the NFL and Chip ignored it in the draft and free agency. He's paying for it now. The defense played well the first half of the season but is worn down and has thrown in the towel.

Youth and injuries.

Sarcasm off/

I have a minority view on Vick. What he did was HORRIBLE. But I believe he has done his best to repay his debt to society. He served a lengthy prison term. Filed for bankruptcy and then came out and fully repaid his creditors more than $20 million. Did a ton of public service work (obviously as part of his sentence) in several inner cities lecturing kids about mistreating animals so that at least something good could come out of it. Every time I saw him on TV in interviews in Philly he said the right thing (as opposed to Donovan who had a habit of putting his foot in his mouth). His teammates swore by Vick as he was one of the most popular guys on the team.

There's a grumpy guy in Foxboro who would like a word with you.

It's fine if people want to pile on Chip but I, for one, love having guys who are willing to challenge conventional wisdom and try new things.

Football can be so excruciatingly conservative. It's good to have some innovative people in it, even if they're not always successful.

I see what you did there.
