OT: Hammondsport, NY Coolest American Small Town?

Oddly enough, I have been to FOUR of those towns... but not Hammondsport.

Cape May (touristy, tacky); Cooke City (just an amazing little gateway into Yellowstone); Port Townsound (serioulsy cool place); and Ste Genevieve (really neat place, glad to see it has rebounded since the floods that decimated it a few years after I was there).

Haha never been there. The house is actually an old farmhouse in Lakemont. I think the only places I've actually been to in Dundee are the Classic Cafe and the Shurfine grocery store. Maybe one of these days I'll get over to the Pour House!
the classic, I grew up on their grilled cheeses! Do yourself a favor, never go to the pour house lol my best friend owns the place, and I still wont drink there.. Horrible. Head down to the VFW.. They won't mind if your not a member.. If it's a Tuesday or Thursday, ask for Linda. Tell her you know her son, she'll love it. (just dont play her in pool for money) Cheapest drinks in town

Hahaha it looks like an absolute dive, that's why I wanted to go (just once). I'm usually not down there during the week, but if I am, maybe I'll stop in for a drink or seven.

Don't forget to vote again today for Hammondsport...last night they were within a tenth of a percentage point of tying for 1st.

Living very near Beaufort, it's hard to argue the quality of the town. Beautiful waterfront, nice shops, some good eating places. Jarhead Jim would want to remind everyone that it's rated that high because Parris Island is next door.

I haven't lived in CNY for years, but I used to play in a pool league that played in dive bars in small towns all over the area, mostly in Cortland, Cayuga and Tompkins counties. It won't fit this survey's definition of "cool," but I always thought the village of Groton was a pretty wild place: its one of those towns where there are at least 2x as many bars as churches, and the two main ones were across the street from each other at one end of Main Street. Big biker town - some nights you couldn't park because there would be lines of custom Harleys filling both sides of Main Street. Lots of really rough looking characters, and I saw a couple of hellacious bar fights there. The two bars were rivals of one another, and I always felt like I was a background extra in some gritty B movie.

Moqui, an update for you; today Groton is a sleepy redneck woodchuck town. Not much happening unless you want to hear bad country tunes while drinking your Keystone light.
One observation, there are very obviously more bars than dentists in town.

Beaufort, SC is a wonderful town...I think it should have been included in this comparison. However, they're talking about Beaufort, NC.

Currently a super close second behind Beaufort, SC...last push to get them to the top.

Voted just now. Margin is still .1%.

Just introduced my wife to this area of the Southern Tier last summer, on a trip back to the Salt City for a 25th high school reunion. We deliberately flew into Binghamton and then zig-zagged our way north. A great trip--and we barely saw a tenth of what we had on our to-do list.

Wow! missed that. Beaufort SC all over Beaufort NC.

Bump..10 hours left.

Don't let those cracker tarheels (home of NC/Duke) beat upstate NY..home of the Orange.

Honestly I think it's rigged...Beaufort is listed right there at the top, the first town listed...and they have mysteriously remained a tenth of a % ahead forever. Looks like ACC refs running that poll.
