This situation with Hurricane Melissa brings back memories for me.

The very first Caribbean trip I took with my current wife was to Jamaica. It was a year or two after that island was hit by Hurricane Allen in 1980.

The vacation was wonderful in many ways. There was no problem with the beautiful resort hotel that we were staying at. However, even a year or two after a much lesser hurricane hit, travel around the island was difficult. We literally couldnt go more than a few miles from our resort.

I cannot image how this monster Cat 5 storm, crawling along at 1 MPH is going to affect that poor island. No doubt recovery will be a slow and difficult multi-year process.

My thoughts go out to all the residents and trapped tourists.

So true. It's a unique and wonderful place. Ironically, alot like our own New Orleans subject to such natural disasters occasionally. Had a girlfriend from Jamaica and have visited many times.
The natural beauty of the Blue Mountains will always persist, but those poor people in tenements? what will become of them?
