I believe one of the benefits of being the host country is that you get to pick some of the fringe events so its not crazy to think baseball/softball return if a country that cares about them hosts.

I lived in SLC before the winter olympics there and remember discussion about how the host nation had some influence over the events. I could very well be wrong but I recall it being talked about a lot.
