OT: IL Fires Cubit - wow

The Bucs still owe $10 million. Anything Illinois were to give him would just be icing. This is one of those hirings that will bring Illinois some name recognition, but that might be about it. He's 20 years removed from his last stint in college as a DB coach at tOSU. Not so sure he'll be gung-ho on the recruiting and dealing with donors, but you never know. You'd have to think that the NFL would come calling in 2017 or 2018.
There is usually an offset clause and in many states it is the law. Lovie is not going to work for nothing.

At first it sounded crazy, but if the Lovie place is in deal then its a very good move trying to correct the Cubit mistake.

Illinois' spring practice wasn't scheduled to start until Friday. I'm sure they'll extend that as far as possible. It gives Lovie a chance to meet with the players and get the plans to them ASAP.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has a very back-loaded contract. Let the Bucs pay him the next two years when his salary coincidentally increases 3 fold for the remainder.

Illinois has Big Ten and BTN money so they can afford Lovie SMith.

Good hire for Illinois. Lovie Smith can coach football. He will bring discipline and just like us hiring an African-American coach it helps with recruiting. I think more P5 African-American HCs is a good thing. I gotta say it does bother me when I look at all the HC coaches in P5 and not many are African-Americans. Basketball doesn't have the same problem as football IMO.

See my post above. Bucs are free and clear.

Huh? It was your post that made me say that. Where do you see Bucs are free and clear?

What I believe that offset means is Bucs will guarantee he makes $5 mil for 2 more years.

So if Illinois pays him $1 mil for next year then the Bucs will pay him $4 mil.
If Illinois pays him $2.5 mil then the Bucs will pay him 2.5 as well.

The only way the Bucs are free and clear is if Illinois is planning on paying him $5 mil are year and that isn't happening.

Illinois should pay him $1 the first two years then use the money saved in years 3-5 or however long the contract is.

I suppose anything is possible. Since there are no NCAA restrictions on coaching salaries, UI might be able to structure a deal that works for everyone.
