The 6-foot Flynn, a smaller point guard like Thomas, had surgery in July 2010 after his rookie season. The former No. 6 overall pick played his final NBA game a week after his 23rd birthday in 2012. Martell Webster battled an assortment of back injuries before he tore his hip labrum -- he even tried prescription glasses on the court to alter his perception and rebalance his posture to relieve pain from his bad hip. Ultimately, Webster underwent surgery in November 2015 to repair a partial tear in his right hip labrum. Twenty-one months have passed and the 30-year-old hasn't been signed since.

For better or worse, LeBron James and Isaiah Thomas are now joined at Thomas' fragile hip

Another 'Cuse mention comes later in the article:

An athlete who plays in a crouch or squat position might be more prone to hip problems. Though there is no comprehensive study on NBA players, guards have not fared well in the small pool of patients. Flynn is one example, but Michael Carter-Williams is another. The former Rookie of the Year underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in March 2016 and has struggled to recapture his pre-injury level of play. In Chicago last season, Carter-Williams averaged 6.6 points per game on 36.6 percent shooting and didn't receive a contract extension. (He signed a one-year, $2.7 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets this offseason.)

I wonder if the mysterious torso injury Franklin Howard suffered last season was also a torn hip labrum? If so, there is quite an epidemic of torn labrums going on with Syracuse PGs...

Posted in the Pro Sports thread about this topic as well. I have a good friend who had a similar injury while in his mid-30s. He's had to completely give up on playing basketball since the injury. The problem he had is his bodies reaction to the injury was to try and overcompensate which caused other issues with the other hip and the groin (as Cherie suggested). He played 3-5 times per week and was very competitive. It kills him to not be able to play anymore.

FYI, this is similar to the injury Bo Jackson sustained. In Flynn's case, Minnesota's front office rushed him back when in reality he should have been shut down. Prior to Flynn, an injury like that hadn't been seen in basketball. There's a very good piece detailing Flynn on what was Grantland.

Pretty sure bo had a dislocated hip and then necrosis requiring a total hip replacement. Flynn had torn labrum. I know what GL article said but bo's seems worse.

The biggest problem with Bo was the lack of a definitive diagnosis. By the time they figured out the problem, it was too late to fix it because blood flow to the hip had been cut off too long.

It's annoying to see people disparage Flynn as a bust who couldn't play without acknowledging that his hip really killed his NBA career. It's tough enough to be successful in the NBA as a smaller guy relying on speed and agility, it's a helluva lot tougher when that elite speed and agility gets knocked down just a peg.

It was a lot more than just a peg. And nobody ever mentions that.

Speaking of pegs - drafting a PG with his skillset, then forcing him to run the moronic Bermuda Triangle Offense (without benefit of MJ & Pippen, or Kobe & Shaq) was possibly the stupidest thing ever, and definitely a case of a square peg in a round hole.

Funny how Rambis's career as a head coach didn't go so well.
