I like the witness John Fatti. No way anyone calls him anything but Fatti.

About three years ago I had a hole in one playing by myself. I had no witness so did it not happen? I still went to the clubhouse afterwards and bought drinks for several people who were sitting at the bar.

I never understood why the guy with a hole-in-one pays for other people's drinks. The hole-in-one dude should get a free round or two.

He’s gonna be a witness next year to Brother Buckets

In fact…

yeah but on how many attempts did he get that witness?

I mean I bet it wasn't efficient witnessing

I’m not a golfer. Is there a Blown Witness stat? Where a guy in your party hits a hole in one but you didn’t see it because you were fishing a skittle out of the seat cushions in the cart?

I knocked one in once from about 80 yards. Sadly it was for a par.
I hit a gem yesterday on one of my course's toughest par 3s. It was awful. I essentially topped it 165 yards but it dribbled right up to the cup about 3ft from the hole. I thought to myself when I saw it approaching the hole, would this still be a hole in one I'd be proud of? Answer came back eventually yes, not pretty, but whatever - it is what it is. If you play enough golf, you take what the game gives you. No more difficult sport exists, in my opinion.

More thoughts on the witness thing... if a hole in one led to other people buying you drinks, I get it. However, it's the reverse. It should be, you have a witness, they buy. In my case, I did not, so I gladly bought, although those old dudes at the bar certainly didn't need another round. My club never did put my name on the hole in one plaque. I never did like that club.

I got a hole-in-one EXACTLY that way. No BS. Am I proud of it? Sure, still a hole in one, but I always clarify with the story. I have hit thousands of better shots, but that’s the one that went down. Twin Ponds 8th hole, btw.

Did you make birdie putt?

Is the Brian Elwell in the first listing the former Syracuse Blazer hockey player? He has to be in his late 70’s by now.
The guy that made the hole in one used a 5 iron from 150. If they are about the same age, which tends to happen with foursomes, it sounds plausible.

I checked, and Brian was born June 11 1943, so he just celebrated his 78th birthday. Good estimate on your part.

I’ve been close twice. Once when a shot rolled up and over the edge of the cup went about three feet past, and once when I was in a twosome and we were trying to play through a foursome. We caught them at the Tee box and I quickly grabbed a club, and whacked it off the tee. Ball stuck and stayed about 6 inches from the cup. I cooly said thanks and jumped back in the cart and drove off trying not too make it too obvious that was one of the best shots I had ever hit, and it doesn’t happen all the time.

so… no hole in one for me.

but I know a really crappy player who has one.

I think one of the worst things that could happen is hitting a hole in one on a second try. Occasionally I hit a second ball when playing by myself. Sometimes I think about that. I wouldn't call that a hole in one though.
