My strongest reaction to the letter was the covert racism in it. "Hoodies" has become a code word for "Trayvon Martin." If the alleged assailants were non-student inner-city kids, why not just say it? If you don't want non-students in your neighborhood, live in campus housing... and not out on Euclid Avenue.
I don't want to stray too off topic, but I have to admit that this was the last thing I thought of when I read it. I just read "hoodies" as some kids wearing sweatshirts trying to avoid being identifiable. I wear a hoodie to a lot of the Syracuse games I attend in cold weather, and I'm about as non-gangsta as they come. Perhaps I'm naive, but racism was not something I thought of while reading. Perhaps because I'm not very knowledgeable of the area the author is writing about. However, like I said, the author could very well have been hinting at just what you imply and I'm just naive and want to believe the best.
