OT: Morgantown Music?

So we’re going to ban a musical number because we canceled the composer? What? That’s cutting off our nose to spite our face. Tell me I’m misinterpreting. I couldn’t care less who wrote it!
I am of the same mindset as Cusefan, I don't entirely disagree with you either. It's just a tough sell given the composer's utterly horrific actions as a human being. Would I like the hey song back, yes and please. But it could/would also come off as more than a little tone deaf (musical pun intended). Knowing his past, makes it all but impossible.

98% of people surveyed would have no clue who wrote it anyway. That’s the point. He’s not receiving royalties if a band plays it. As a culture we have become so paranoid and oversensitive and for what?

The whole thing is ridiculous and the fan experience just continues to sink into the sewers.

I still say it’s BS. Unless you’re sitting right next to the students you can’t tell what they’re saying.
Yes you could. I had seasons in the 300's on the other end of the field and I could understand it. It wasn't just the students that chanted it.

Stop and ask yourself: why did virtually every team in the country stop playing the hey song at exactly the same time?

If you’re struggling figuring it out, I can help. The NJ Devils sent out a letter to season ticket holders covering changes for that season. In the letter they acknowledged that the song was a long standing tradition for the Devils. However, they did not want to even have the potential of giving off the impression they were unsympathetic in any way to the victims of the types of crimes he committed - as a result they were going to discontinue its use. From the perspective of the team, the potential hit to their brand image was not worth the risk of continuing use of the song. I’m certain Syracuse feels the same way, they do not want to damage their brand. Because the percentage of people who can make the connection between the song, the artist, and his crimes is much, much, much higher than the 2% of the population you suggest.

And while Syracuse hasn’t come out and said anything as explicitly as the Devils did (that I know of, that letter was only sent to Devils season ticket holders) - I’m sure Syracuse administrators would have the same opinion. So as a final question - what kind of fan would you be if the team you claim to support told you “please don’t ask us to play this song, because we’re concerned doing so will hurt our brand”?

My answer would be “not a very good one”. So if it’s still necessary, I’ll ask on behalf of Syracuse University - please stop pushing for the band to restart the use of the hey song, because it could damage the brand of the school and the teams you support.

I concur the fan experience suffers. And Id love to be able to say play the song, but, no.

When I originally mentioned I was upset we stopped playing it, I thought it was bc we students back in my day were chanting the word. I have now been well informed since, the main reason why is due to much more horrendous reasons. I work with many teenagers who are victims of such horror, for a living. I wouldn' t say it's being oversensitive to say, based on the composer's past, and the suffering he has caused, the song should not be played. His actions are hurting victims for a lifetime and beyond.

I greatly enjoy your wit and candid humor Franco, and largely agree otherwise with ya man. Wow, this whole thread became a lot more nuanced than just, I was mad SU banned the hey song bc we used to swear.

It’s ok to disagree. I’m just saying, did the song cause suffering or did the composer? In a society where we haven’t lost our minds I think it’s pretty easy to separate the two concepts. There are plenty of rap songs out there that literally promote suffering and harmful behavior and nobody blinks an eye. The hey song is an innocent feel good tune, but no, we can’t have it.

The rationale you and others espouse here is the sort of thing that paralyzes society.

You are sincere and not wrong my syr fan friend. You ask did the song or composer promote the suffering. Great point. I will suggest a good way to look at things is this, and typed with love for ya, if on an oklahoma (or wherever) newspaper tmrw am, reads "Mrs. Elsa, 59, went to a fb game, and left' bc she had to leave, bc of trauma, that her daughter showed, and the reason she said it was, bc the song was done by the monster that wrote it is the same one/type playing in the ears at a fb game." Crazy we are on this, but real nonetheless :(

I actually never realized it was such a popular song. I never really liked it, so I didn't miss it when it was gone. And I didn't know who wrote it or that he was a scumbag until this thread.
