OT: Olberman slams Penn State

So to you, our 1990 lacrosse team is 0-13, not 13-0? Did that "change our culture"? http://www.collegecrosse.com/2012/9...-in-the-history-of-history-tournament-16-2005

I don't know. Looks like we didn't do it again?

I've said it before removing wins seems like a dumb way to go about it - but there are only so many pulls and levers to attack a rampant culture with, right?

The goal is to punish an institution for creating an environment that is not in line with the values of the other institutions. If winning is placed before the welfare of children - doesn't it stand to reason that the wins accrued would be seen as less than what they were?

A institution is made of individuals, some of whom did bad things and others who did not. Punish the individuals who did bad things. If you feel the need to punish the institution, do it where it really hurts. $$$$$.

But the people were emboldened and pushed by the power of their positions - made possible by a the culture surrounding the sport. And they did suffer. Money was also apart of the deal - but money to fans (especially that much) doesn't hurt one way or another.

The point of vacating wins is to somehow get at the community and culture that enabled the atrocity. I don't know that vacating them achieves this - but taking and then giving them back? In the words of Olberman "made things worse"...

Three possibilities:
  1. Before season opener
  2. Before homecoming game
  3. Before biggest home game (Ohio State if it's there this season)

My guess would be Michigan. They play OSU on the road.

It's beyond the institution of PSU, it's the enabling culture that the sanctions should have addressed. Penn State football with Saint Joe as its titular head produced an environment where the interests of the culture superseded the monster it fostered. Actions taken against Sandusky were tempered by what the impact would be on the program. Initial NCAA sanctions would have made some impact - loss of scholarships and a bowl ban certainly would have had an on the field impact but the NCAA began backpedalling immediately. Allowing Penn State to represent the NCAA at a sanctioned game in Ireland, the phased restoration of scholarships, the lifting of the Bowl ban, and now the restoration of wins. The only penalty left is the $60M fine but I'm not cure how that impacts a state institution. I doubt there were any financial repercussions on the football program, possibly on some minor sports, or not allowing the band to travel to as many games, but no tangible impact on the culture.

The reactions of Penn State nation - "We were the victims." "The NCAA realized they were wrong to come after us." "Put back the statue." - show that nothing has changed in Happy Valley.

Are we trying to hurt the fans? if this had happened at SU, would it be the fans fault?

If it happened at SU, I would want to clean house and start over the right way. A 2-year break might be required to do that.

the fans. It's about a college that KNOWINGLY allowed this predator to use its facilities to defile children, and let him use his association with Penn State to put the parents at ease about his interest in those boys. The whole football program should have been banned for as long as Sandusky preyed on those kids.
Anyone who is still a fan of PSU football is morally bankrupt.

Despite what the worthless NCAA did; everyone knows how low rent PSU is and how they tried to cover up child abuse!
