Overreaction of politcal correctness, IMO. You're gonna take away thousands of dollars for education purposes?

Really? I've heard this chant in local high school gyms.

Then maybe they should deal with race issues in high school. Adults in college on scholarship should know better than to chant some racist nonsense. I honestly don't expect anything better from Mississippi.

Is it really a race issue? I've heard this chant directed at a German player.

Taking away their scholarships might have been a little harsh, but they're idiots to begin with. I'm all for mocking opponents, but I prefer clever mockery rather than what could be perceived as bigoted and racist mockery (especially when, as Rodriguez was quick to point out, he's from freaking Puerto Rico so he doesn't need any documentation...all these USM kids did was make themselves look stupid).

What about the taunts directed at Andy and KJ for being Canadian?

It's all just incredibly stupid because Puerto Rico is a territory of the US, and the kid hails from Miami. Just a dumb decision that went viral. I think the punishment is completely fair.

yeah, definitely tons of issues with illegals from germany in the US.

Do you watch the news?
I'm saying people are making it a race issue just to make it a race issue

What part of this isn't racist? A group of people made fun of another kid for no reason other than he's Puerto Rican. They may have thought he was Mexican, but regardless it's an issue of the belittling of a person of a race other than their own.

People aren't making this a race issue, it is a race issue. It's a shame you can't see this.

Okay, but I'm part hispanic, and am not offended by this at all

Those chants didn't come from left field & are not at all synonymous with "USA" chants directed at KJo or Andy.
These idiots just ASSUMED that Rodriguez was an illegal. Why???
If it wasn't about his race, then why not just chant "USA USA", as they do to alot of foreign players?
What was it about RODRIGUEZ that gave them the idea that he wasn't a US citizen?
And compound it with the fact that he is a citizen of PRican descent, & what excuse is there other than racial/ethnic stereotyping?
Pardon the pun, but some situations are black & white- this appears to be one of them.
JMHO :noidea:

Maybe you should turn up your racial sensitivity dial. The chant was the equivalent of chanting "Go back to Africa" at a black player. Is that acceptable to chant?

I think people should turn down their racial sensitivity dials, but that's just me :noidea:
I think part of the reason they do dumb stuff like this (Chant USA USA or where's your green card) is because of the reactions PC people have

Yeah, that's why.

You obviously had this all answered before...why start the thread.

You didn't answer the second part of that, did you? If "Where's your green card?" is acceptable is "Go back to Africa" acceptable? They seem pretty similar to me. And similarly racist.

I think go back to africa is a worse chant than where's your green card

Again, you keep using this flawed example to try & explain your position.
"USA USA"= NATIONALITY
"WHERE'S YOUR GREEN CARD"= RACE
If that wasn't the case & they assumed Rodriguez was a foreigner, they would've just chanted USA USA.
Chanting "Where's you green card" implies ILLEGAL ALIEN.
And they came to that flawed assumption based on Rodriguez's race & ethnicity.
Apples & Oranges.

They mean almost the exact same thing. They both mean "you don't belong here in whitey land." Why do you think one is worse?

Early 90s... SU playing Miami... During pre-game warmups a guy in Sitrus shouts "Hey Popa, where's your green card?!"... Dome goes silent, kid is roundly admonished...

Wasn't appropriate then, isn't appropriate now.

And our kid was from Jersey, so save the "figures it's Mississippi" nonsense.
