OT: Student with Down syndrome voted W. Genny homecoming king

Awesome, awesome story. I love it. As a parent of a child with DS stuff like this literally brings me to tears. Anyone who takes the time (and I didn't when I was young and stupid, so I'm not judging) to get to know somebody with DS will come away a better person for it.
One of the brothers of my highschool girlfriend had Downs Syndrome. Just a great, great kid. Totally loving and open and innocent. I was touched when I found out many, many years later that he still talked about me. It made me feel good to know that I had treated him well in my youth.

The local Stop and Shop employS Down Syndrome kids as baggers at the check out counters in the summer. I always make a point of profusely thanking them. You've never seen smiles as big as those that I get in return.

There is no question that there is much more of an effort to mainstream kids with disabilities these days than when I was young.

And, to the credit of both societies' youngest, and their parents, it is amazing to me how much more tolerant of diversity, whether because of a disability or whether it is simply a kid who marches to the beat of his/her own drum, that kids are today than they were when I was in school.
