OT: TEMPLE TO CUT 7 SPORTS, INCLUDING BASEBALL, ROWING

That's too bad. When I think of rowing, I think of Philadelphia.

When you think of garbage, think of Akeem

Biggest undergrad population in the country I think. They could get fan interest/support if they win consistently.

That is not true. Temple has 27,275 undergrads. Compare that with some of the monster numbers on this list (Arizona State has almost 60K).

2nd largest in their own state.

That sounded crazy, so i had to look it up. Not in top 10 as of 2009-10

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_United_States_universities_by_undergraduate_enrollment

They list 27,567 on their website.

Hmm not sure where I got that from, but clearly was wrong. There is something though, maybe if you include part timers I don't know. In any case they still have 10k or so more than we do and nearly double is when counting grads. Enough to support a good football team.

If they're really good, or great, maybe. They're in a northeastern city with pro sports. The same mentality as in NYC and Boston. It's that mentality, and associated attendance, that got Temple booted from the Big East.

Have to admit,I don't find many attempts at humor on our board here very funny. So when I see one that makes me laugh out loud, I need to give props. This one was funny-well done.

As a man and former collegiate baseball player, allow me to say, Title IX blows (at least in the context of collegiate athletics).

I think it's more the fact that they didn't invest in football, didn't care about football, and as a result were a absolutely horrific for many many years until Al Golden arrived. The current leadership at temple is investing in a lot of good stuff, they are making things happen there at a rapid pace in terms of developing the campus area, cutting departmental overhead, marketing to a specific type of student, and leveraging the few truly solid academic programs to benefit the broader institutional priorities. And it seems like they may be committed to trying to make football work because it fits their vision on a number of levels. As I recall it Rutgers and temple were essentially on equal footing in the big east in the 90's- both were perennial losers. Now we laugh at Rutgers recent misfortune, but going from where they were to getting a big 10 invite shows that if resources and commitment are applied, a school like temple could get a decent program going that is capable of driving fan support.

This isn't about Title IX. That's a convenient excuse for schools who continue to lose millions trying to play big-time football. Temple should be playing Nova or Gtown and stop the charade.

The NCAA needs a new football division or some other minimum requirement of overall sports for teams to stay FBS. They don't care that hundreds of student-athletes lost their opportunity to play a sport because an administration has delusional aspirations.

Temple should absolutely be in the FCS along with Nova, Gtown, etc, but I understand that they think the AAC revenues make it worth the attempt...even though it isn't the reality.
