Horrific story out of Frisco, TX this week. A young 17 year old by the name of Karmelo Anthony (goes by Melo) got into a confrontation with another teenager at a track meet. He pulled out a knife and stabbed the kid to death. Bad ‘Melo. Just horrific

Yeah a co worker of mine was at the track meet when it happened. Horrific.

Should be interesting to see how the self-defense motive plays out here.

I don’t think he stands a chance. It may actually have been premeditated based on some other information I’ve seen (texting friends saying he was going to stab somebody that day). If that info is true the kid is cooked.

I’ve been going to track meets for years. Track kids are some of the nicest athletes I’ve ever been around, as are the families. Much better than the typical AAU basketball crowds I’ve witnessed.

Kids don’t bring knives to track meets unless they are looking for trouble. This kid was looking for trouble. He is toast and deservedly so.

Terrible tragedy for the victim, his family, and his teammates.

The kid with the knife was not on a track team. He showed up after skipping school.

Lots of rumors out there. I read somewhere that the karmelo kid, and the kid he stabbed were familiar with each other and had run-ins before. I read that the kid that got stabbed had initiated the confrontation by trying to make the Karmelo kid move or leave. I can not validate any of this but Texas does have the "stand your ground" rule. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Bull sheet. What in the world do you read? You obviously don't know anything about stand your ground. There was no threat of violence. kid with the knife entered the tent where he did not belong. He stabbed the other kid to death while saying "do you get the point?". Nothing interesting here unless he does not get the death penalty

I happen to know quite a bit about "stand your ground" since I am a native of Florida, the first State to enact the stand your ground law for 20 years or so now. A person may use deadly force and not have to retreat when threatened with violence under stand your ground. From what I have read, since the Metcalf kid initiated contact with the Karmelo kid and tried to physically remove him, which is not only a threat of violence but is actual violence, he may be able to use stand your ground in his defense. I dont know how it will turn out, nor do I know what really actually happened that led up to the deadly confrontation, since I wasnt there. So Im not going to go back and forth with you. We will know how it turns out in a year or so.

I think he will probably have to hope that his case is convincing enough for a lighter sentence after he is convicted.

The general rule (and a very quick search seems to indicate that it applies in Texas) is that you may use like force, not increase the force. Seemingly, someone putting thier hands on you does not allow you to stab or shoot them, absent a reasonable belief that by use of thier hands, they were going to kill you.
BTW- who brings a knife to a track meet.

Can't anyone in Texas carry a gun? A knife seems like a downgrade from that.

There has to be a threat of violence
There was none. The perp invaded the victims space. The invader cannot argue that he was standing his ground. There will be no stand your ground defense.

A link to an article that lists the KNOWN facts of the case, and I'll leave 1 quote from the article:

The case has captured national attention and police say fake statements and falsified documents about the incident have surfaced on social media.

Frisco police have released multiple statements trying to combat misinformation in the case.

Some of the misinformation included posts by an account posing as Frisco's police chief and images claiming to be a report from the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office.

Frisco police say that only official releases from verified accounts should be trusted. They are urging people not to spread any unconfirmed information.

Took 2 seconds to find the real facts. some of ya'll gotta stop getting your info from FB, X, and IG

Don’t drag Utica into this, dawg. The Utica YMCA closed in the early 2000s.
I have lived in Utica and I love Utica!
Call me weird if ya want, awesome food.
Worked as a chef in Old Forge area for a long time as well and Utica was my nearest point of relief or what some would call a place to buy products and bull shitey but what I would call unnecessary. What is it that you need so bad that OFH doesnt sell?
...obvs Old Forge Hardware...
NADA.

I agree with the idea that motives for crimes could potentially make them dismissable. Proof of "stand your ground" needs to still be proven, thats what could be difficult.
I was made a fool of on this board for suggesting that.

I also feel this is true...~~99% of stabbings are provoked or in self defense. It does happen but very rare that people walk around and stab randoms.

You rarely see in the news...A gang member stabbed another gang member today...just... a total nutcase stabbed someone for no reason today.

Snitches get stitches.
