OT: US Soccer Qualifiers Have Me More Freaked Out than Cuse & March Madness

I coming to terms with the fact that for the first time since 1986 there is a pretty decent chance we might miss the world cup.

My best case scenario we get 1 point from a miserable game against CR and lost to Mexico and Klinsmann gets canned and we bring back Bradley and get into the 4th place playoff against south america. BTW I absolutely could not stand RoboBob but this is what it has come down to.

Here is an interesting question for soccer fans... is this sudden rash of "injuries" real or players not wanting to play for Klinsie? Is Donovan in Asia right now because he needs a break or because of Klinsie?

I've thought about that last point and think there's got to be something to it. I have a hunch that there's some discord between some of the players and the coach. As for Bob, he's doing a hell of a job in Egypt, but I think he took the USMNT as far as he could. Who else is out there? Maybe we can get Mourinho! :D

Bob Bradley? Uh no thanks.

I'm sure there is someone who would take the job if Jurgen failed. But is it really his fault that we got hit with all these injuries at the same time? You can blame him for convincing the top players to move to better leagues abroad and lose playing time. But he's doing the best job he can with the players available. Let's see what happens against CR and Mexico before we get all over Klinsmann.

Guzan has been playing great @ Villa and he plays every game there with suspect defenders in front of him.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Guzan in the pipes. Did as much as you could ask for to save Villa from relegation this weekend. Had two huge saves on a Chris Samba header and drive from the top of the box. could have been down 3-0 by the half if not for him.

And yes, I watch games like QPR v. Aston Villa.. Oh Lord

What makes Guzan better than Rimando though?

Rimando has been very, very good for RSL and deserves a shot. Same with Sean Johnson. Just because Guzan plays in the EPL doesn't make him better.

He does it every week for them. Without Guzan in net and Benteke up front they would be going down and it wouldnt be close.

Perhaps im just more confortable with Guzan based on a larger product sample i've seen from him and again he's used to not having any sort of defense. Lichaj can barely even get a game @ Villa and when he's selected he looks outmatched which leads to a bigger issue. Keepers aren't the issue for the US, it's the other 10 spots. Have we ever had a striker that opposing teams had to be concerned with?

Jozy could be that guy and probably should be by now.

Yeah I've tought that for the last few years and I'm not sure he'll ever have "it". He's extremly physically gifted but I'm not sure he has the field vision and his first touch lets him down far too often. Plus it seems a bit easy for defenders to get in his head.

Jozy has the skillset and experience to score the goals we need at this point... The problem isn't Jozy (or our forwards).

The problem is lack of competent wing-middy play to serve the ball to our forwards and get them chances to score.

We haven't had solid wing play since Donovan and Holden were sharing duties 3-4 years ago.

Shea looks like a quickly developing solid winger, but he's not there quite yet...

Plus, we are playing 3-4 holding/Defensive middies at a time now under Klinsmann...

We starve our for our forwards of service and wonder why they can't score...

A midfield 3 of Holden, Bradley, Jones I think would do very well. I doubt those 3 ever play together though...

Jury's out on if Holden will ever make it back to the same form... his injury was pretty serious... and Jones is no spring chicken, that is for sure...

Holden is an aggressive tackler that has a penchant for getting injured on aggressive tackles... Loved his all-around skills, but he drove himself into the ground (literally) over-doing it on tackling... tho he did have that 1.5 mos. stint a couple years ago where he was essentially the best tackling midfielder in the premiership before injury...

This story from the Sporting News is an absolute MUST-READ. It appears to be extremely well sourced, and it shows that there appears to absolutely be some truth to the above. Reading this, one has to feel awfully pessimistic about the future of Jurgen and the USMNT.

The gist of this rather long, in-depth story is as follows, but do yourself a favor and give it a read.

Friendly fire: U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s methods, leadership, acumen in question

Over the past several weeks, Sporting News has spoken to 22 individuals with ties to the U.S. national team or its members—including 11 current players based in MLS or abroad. The remaining sources make their living in American soccer and have reliable relationships with players, coaches and executives. Sources were offered anonymity in exchange for their anecdotes, observations and opinions. Those identified by name are Klinsmann and three players who spoke shortly before Sporting News commenced reporting this story.

What emerged over the course of these discussions was near unanimity regarding the players’ flagging faith in Klinsmann, his staff and his methods, along with the squad’s absence of harmony.
In conversation after conversation, the same themes emerged:
— Klinsmann and chief assistant Martin Vasquez either lack the tactical acumen and game-day chops to successfully lead the team or fail to communicate their wishes effectively.
— Too much time and too many resources are spent on initiatives that don’t translate to the field.
— Constant lineup changes and building resentment over the perceived importance and attitude of the German-born players are harming team chemistry.

Holy crap this field is such a mess. They are playing in very nearly a blizzard.

But hey! 1-0 so far!

Really difficult to watch. They should've used an orange ball.

Also interesting - Clint Dempsey is officially wearing the captain's band tonight. I kinda expected it to go to Michael Bradley, but I guess Deuce makes as much sense as anyone.

Never been impressed with Zusi. I know the squad is depleted but is there anyone else to swap him for?

I read that it's a nike vs adidas thing. yellow vs orange. (not kidding)
You know, I didn't even realize it was yellow until that closeup just now of it in Guzan's arms.

they play full 90 starting 0-0 but the cards count.
Really? That's amazing.

But yeah. You're right. We'll probably score 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half and the game will get called.

FIFA. SMH.

I was at Columbus when USA played Mexico in feb 2009. It was cold and windy but no snow. It was an awesome experience to be shout "dos a cero" to El Tri fans
