They are not the same thing.

ESPN3 is tied to your Internet Service Provider... this should make it available to most of us.

WatchESPN is tied to your Video Service Provider. Those with Cablevision, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Time Warner and Verizon FiOS are covered. Those with DiSH Network, DirecTV or AT&T U-Verse are currently SOL.

OK, I see that ESPN has merged the websites, but the access limitations are still there.

Those on the previously mentioned WatchESPN blackout list cannot view programs that are only shown on the actual TV stations. These are shown with a key icon, indicating that they're locked. The blackout list people (including myself) can only see programs which are provided by ESPN3. Additionally, the WatchESPN mobile apps require email addresses associated with the aforementioned Video Service Providers (how did you think I got that list?).
