OTish: Hop candidate at UNLV?

Looks like the ideal spot for Rick when he leaves the 'Ville.
That's been rumored. He will decide after the season what to do. Chairman of board of trustees spoke and gave full support to Pitino and wants him to stay as long as he wants. We shall see.

Rick Pitino is waiting for Billy Donovan to flame out in the NBA and then Donovan will replace Pitino.

Do you have a link to a definitive statement from Boeheim to support that? Boeheim was very non-committal in the most recent interview I've seen on that topic.

Syverud announced it for him. The only question is will JB move it up a year unannounced so he doesn't have the world tour of thank you's at visiting schools.

This isn't the first time I've seen this expressed. Curious why I've seen people say let Hopkins go and let GMac(not Autry) be the next coach? Autry has more coaching experience and seemingly more recruiting connections than GMac does, correct?

Why exactly would we want GMac as our next coach? Because he was a great player? We have absolutely no idea if he'd be a good coach or not. Hopkins has way more experience and a reputation as one of the better recruiters in the country, but we don't want him? We want the least experienced of our assistants?

I don't get the line of thinking.
I would venture to guess a fair number of posters even forget that Autry is on the staff.

Did you see Boeheim's interview with Seth Davis recently?

And that tells me it wasn't completely JBs call.

Fly hop !! Fly !!! Fly !!

If coach B wants to stay ten more years and is still capable , he shouldn't feel as if he should retire just so hop can get this gig
Nah, its time. It is showing in the recruiting. We are getting nice players, but no really big impact guys.

I have to admit I've always preferred this. I admire and respect the loyalty that Hop has shown and all that he's done for the program, but hiring an established head coach would be my choice for a program of our stature.
Continuity hires scare the hell out of me. Right now, we are a very attractive destination job for a top head coach with experience. If we go downhill under Hop, it could set us back for decades in this "what have you done lately?" world we live in as our recruiting suffers and attendance continues to drop.
