Everyone here knows about Cooney. Kid would be great as a dude off the bench who can come in, play hard nosed D, hit 3's, hustle, play 18-20 min, etc. But the fact that we need him to produce for 37mpg kills us.

I really want to see Kaleb for at least 5-7mpg at this point. He can't be worse than some of the lapses we've seen with TC and G

That might be a little too bold.

It's just not missed shots, that happens to anyone. I loved that shot G took when were down by 2 -- it was a fastbreak where Pitt had 3 guys back and G was alone, he took a 17 foot jumper with a dude in his face and air balled it. He literally could get that shot whenever he wanted. Just not smart basketball.
One-on-one, with nobody else around. Someone enlighten me. Why didn't he drive to the hoop?. Better percentage to get points with a layup or foul. Maybe our guards don't finish well?

It happens when much better players that wanted to come to SU, but either wasn't offered or passed over like Monte Morris, Jalen Brunson, Melo Trimble, JaQuan Newton, and Jamal Murray, ends up elsewhere. While in return, JB signs off on Ron Patterson and Kaleb Joseph. If we landed just one out of those five, we would be in a much better position when it comes to guard depth. The fact that we have to play two guards nearly 40 minutes per over the last three seasons is a joke. Feels like forever now when PG U had Burger Boys sitting on the bench because the guard depth was really good.

Good post. I would've liked Cat Barber too.

i might just be that jb thinks roberson will respond to it and doesn't think it would work with cooney. which sort of makes sense - roberson needs to be giving us energy so a little kick in the pants might help. Cooney needs to be making shots, which nothing can really help.

Unfortunately I really don't think that's the strategy. That just seems to be the way Jim coaches his guys. It's not like we ever see him loving a guy up because he thinks they will respond to that. He always seems to have his guys who he loves for some odd reason (see Baye, Cooney), but guys like Rak, Harris, and now Roberson, who he is just flat out an a$$hole towards. The weird part is the guys he tends to get on are typically quiet guys who you would think wouldn't respond well to that kind of coaching. I mean it's not like Harris ever improved. It's not like Roberson is improving, and Rak certainly wasn't any good Freshman - Junior year while JB would ride him. It wasn't until his Senior year when he was forced to let Rak play and lead was it until he finally broke out.

Newton really bums me out.

This is what really boggles my mind. After getting burned by Davis and Nerlens it's almost like JB doesn't want to put up a fight for recruits anymore. Just look at the guys we have got recently. Very rarely are we in a long drawn out battle. Ennis, and KJ we put the full court press on leaving little doubt. Guys like Malachai, Lydon, Moyer, Grant, and Roberson we locked up early. We fought for Coleman because we knew we'd win. Then there are guys like Chino, Ron, BJ, where you wonder why we took a chance when said guys were still available.

If you think about it we really haven't even missed on many guys other than Bryant where we actually stayed in the battle throughout the process. I'm not sure if it's lack of will, arrogance thinking that he can win with the guys he finds that fit his style, or whatever else, but I really think we are doing ourselves a disservice not going after some of these top guys. We have a nationally recognized tradition, a home court everyone knows and wants to play in front of 20k a night, strong academics, some of the best if not the best facilities in the country, and a strong winning tradition that spans decades. I mean it should be pretty easy to recruit to that. I'd like to see JB be much more aggressive when it comes to recruiting the top talent.

Newton? How about Jamal freakin Murray? That dude is a flat out superstar.
Agreed, but he reclassified to be eligible this season. We, you know, wouldn't have had room. Or something like that.

Just like if we would have landed Bryant, I think we were allowed to hold off on the scholly penalties for another season. So if JB wanted to add Murray for this season, it wouldn't have been an issue. I dunno what's worse, JB never bothering to offer Murray throughout the process or never watching a single HS game of his?

Re Murray: it really is a head scratcher. Unless he knew Kentucky was going to swoop in last minute like they did before then I don't get why he didn't even make an attempt at him. 6'5 pg is someone he is typically all over.

There just has to be more to this...

Murray fam is close with the Ennis fam. I think after the sour grapes about Ennis from JB after he bounced, that maybe JB just didn't want to bother with that side again. Just a curious theory because it really made no sense to never have offer him. Then again, Monte Morris and Jalen Brunson both attended JB's elite camp and neither received offers. Morris has been an NCAA leading assist to turnover ratio PG for three straight years now. Can't tell me we couldn't use PG play like that at SU.

I had no idea Morris went to the elite camp. Wow. me.

Damn...now I'm just pissed.

I think this is one of the reasons I am interested to see what the Hopkins era brings.

One thing with Boeheim - I think in his old age he has made some interesting decisions RE: recruiting... i.e. not going after a legit top-tier one-and-done guy unless he has him locked up early (see McCullough or Donte Greene). Or guys that could be around 2 years, but not wanting to put up much of a fight unless there are indications early that it's in the bag.

I think Hopkins will go after many more of the elite kids. Will he reel them in? Who knows. But it should certainly make for some interesting discussions.

Oh hell yes he can. He can be and HAS been MUCH worse

The 2013 class was rated by the experts as the #6 or 7# recruiting class coming in without a burger boy in the outfit. One of Canada's best, NJ's best, Pa's best lead the charge and rounded out by the others. You need a combination of all when recruiting. Great players will leave, long term serviceable players stay 4 or 5yrs, some transfer for various reasons and some just hang on as deep bench players to be apart of the team/practice players. Now, that being said, BJ was not a miss at all, maybe mismanaged but definitely not a miss. He was recruited and was locked up early by the coaching staff. If not for the circumstances, BJ would still be playing significant role on this team. So really no need to wonder.

Screw the future, we should be able to beat this crappy team now.

In the past 2 years we flat out whiffed on 3 recruits, had 3 kids who had no business leaving early leave, lost another kid and had one of those early entries blow up his leg. And we were on probation. And we'll end this 2 year stretch with 40 something wins. Not terrible.

G didn't play his smartest game this year. But the glimpse of the future out there was nice.
Future? Do you really think Joseph is part of the rotation next year? Or were you saying Richardson and Thomas at guard with Roberson and Lydon at forwards? While possible, even that is a stretch.

i'm not exactly sure why joseph even chose to come back this semester. my transfer letter would be signed sealed and delivered. playing with the walk-ons really ? buh bye.

I don't understand how the evaluation of Kaleb Joseph was so wrong. I mean it wasn't even just Syracuse who was wrong, he was ranked higher than all they players mentioned in this thread by the recruiting services. That's the spot that is just killing us right now.
