Well, first, if any of you remember my thread on the bet with the FSU fan.....he chickened out and there was no bet.

Second - he totally admits the refs blew it on the missed holding call.

Three - he was very impressed w shrader, called him an excellent runner and a good passer, who would have been even better as a passer if not for drops.

Four - he thought our d was not bad.

FWIW, in the end he really did not understand how we lost the game.

That non holding call definitely stings but for me leaving those six points on the field is what lost the game. That’s what really stings. I will say every game this season has been highly entertaining though and we have a good team.

What 6 points are we talking about? I’m fuzzy on the math.

I think he means going for it on first down in the 1st quarter and not converting a 4th and 2 instead of kicking the FG, and then missing a FG later.

Not getting an attempt to close the first half when we had the ball around the 40 with a timeout.

Okay, but even more critical was not recognizing the FSU fumble and having it turn into a touchdown.

We got stopped on fourth down twice; once in the first quarter around the 30 yard line and once in the third quarter on the goal line. If we went for the FG in both of those circumstances we win the game. I get that this is modern coaching (going for it) but those pesky points tend to haunt teams.

The Shrader miss at the goal line resulted in us getting the ball back at mid field which allowed us to score a quick touchdown. The first one in the first quarter and messing up the end of the first half hurt, but I like Dino’s confidence that we can pick up two yards.

the cliche ...if I had a nickle for every time a syracuse coach kicked a field goal inside the 5 and the syracuse fans complained about kicking instead of going for it... I'd be rich. The board narrative would be that Babers has no balls, you're on the road you don't kick fg's you play to win, he's not playing to win ... yada yada...the board flip flopping over that decision is bi-polar. I'd bet 95% of the board was yelling go for it until they didn't they get it.

I hear you, but I can assure you I’m consistent with this. Probably comes from being raised as a NYG fan, but I’ve always been in the camp of take the easy three points.

I might have been talking about the wrong play so my bad. The 4th and 2 from the 30 I kick it. The 4th and goal from the 2 or whatever it was I'm going for it.

The 4th and 2 from the 30 the play call was hot freaking garbage.

They absolutely were. There were a couple in the game thread that wanted the field goal, more than usual though I will say. I just wish they tried to take advantage of an over aggressive D early in the 1st with more dynamic play call on 4th down. It seemed that everybody knew where they were going. At a minimum let Shrader roll out with run or pass option. Everybody would be a gambler if you never lost!!

All that said, I certainly don't see the call win or lose at that point of the game as an indictment on Dino. He went for it, didn't get it and you move on.

agreed...the 4th and 2 from the 30 was about 50/50 for and against in the game thread. 100% unanimous that the play call was hot garbage though. They even ran that play out of a time out which just adds to the Gilbert frustration.

The play itself was sort of a delayed hand off, with Queeley going in motion running behind the QB. Elmore goes left with Queeley. Handoff goes right. Trying to get some type of misdirection which is just bizarre because it's slow to develope. Of course the play gets blown up going right because #52 doesn't freaking block anyone. Veterello. So maybe if Vet can occasionally block someone on the other team the play works.

Hate getting cute though. Just play to your strengths and run left behind your two best lineman and Elmore. Even if it's a QB keeper.

Out of the mouth of an FSU fan leaving the stadium:

"Man, y'all's quarterback, he is TOUGH. AS. NAILS."

I nodded approvingly as his fellow season ticket holders agreed with shakes of their own heads.

We really have something in Garrett I think.

Dungy 2.0 is what I've said from day one. We're gonna love this kid

Gilbert feels like a home run hitter calling plays. HR or whiff. I am not saying his good calls are all TD's but he ain't hitting for average. Very frustrating. Somewhere in there lies a competent play caller. I really like some of his stuff and then I hate the next 2 series. It's kind of maddening really. I am not saying I am right, just the way I feel while watching the games. He was on a roll for awhile and Shrader really seemed to be responding and found a nice flow to the game which lead to some big plays and that is what you need to score points consistently. You could see shrader getting comfortable and just playing the game the way he likes

Everyone keeps assuming Szmyt makes every one of these hypothetical kicks. With a holder that isn't typically holding. Didn't he miss a XP? Damned if you do damned if you don't.

I will agree that the time management before the half could have been improved.

I'm always a fan of going for it on 4th and less than two once you hit mid field. The play call in the 1st was atrocious.

I'd like to know if the folks complaining about going for the first down Saturday are the same people who called for DB's head for NOT going for it in the Rutgers game. I'm too lazy to research it, so if this applies to anyone here, Fess Up.

Also, not interested in the rationalizations of different situations. Either we should try to convert on short yardage, or not.

You can't use that logic. The outcome could vary wildly in any direction if the score is different. Different play calling, different results, potentially very different score.

I thought a big miss was about two plays before that no call holding. Their QB is scrambling as the play breaks down and we string it out to the left side but quit on the play thinking he's going out of bounds. Because of the D puling up, (may have been Wax) Travis instead turns the corner and gets a 20 yard first down instead on what was a 3rd and long (he goes out and they punt IIRC). That is the play that game them life and energy.

That’s nice. Won’t change a thing and if anything will be just as bad or worse going forward. Terrible refs. That wasn’t the only missed call. There others that helped FSU at times it needed it most. Congrats on the win. FSU is back.

watch it again, that was a bang bang play with perfect bounce for FSU, nothing could be done, friggin (more!) bad luck!
That was my impression also. It was a tough break, but I didn't feel like we totally blew an easy recovery.
