ESPN asks five of its "draft experts" who the most overrated player in this year's draft is (link requires insider access).

Noel gets two votes.

Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng each get one.

Dave Telep gives his vote to MCW:
"Within the context of the draft lottery, he's the guy most difficult to pin down since high school. The size is enticing and the assist numbers were good, but his shot has always been an area of concern, and since his sophomore year in high school, he's struggled with decisions. He ate well versus Syracuse's early fluffy schedule."

Meanwhile, a writer for USA Today/a couple of the guys that do an Orlando Magic radio show are on board with drafting MCW at #2.

And dominated arguably the best team in the nation, Indiana.

You missed that part of the quote from Telep.

Right?

Right?

It's getting a bit ridicoulous that these jokers are still bashing Syracuse for its OOC schedule. As long as I can remember people always gotta hate on our system of scheduling. Over the past 4 years, our program has been elite. Hate on us all you want, you just end up looking stupid. Every school has creampuffs on their schedule. damn....

IMO, this was not a shot at the way Syracuse schedules, just a statement of fact that the pre-conference schedule was not filled with heavy weight teams/talent.

Yeah, I mean, the quote wasn't about how good SU is as a team. It was about MCW as a pro. So the argument that we have a great road record or whatever doesn't mean much when assessing MCW's chances as an NBA player. How recent guys who have come out of the program would have more relevance.

MCW's success can be measured in the success Syracuse STILL had without leading 3 point scorer James Southerland for the games he was out.

In the early games Southerland made up for nearly or over, I'm fairly sure, 50% of MCW's assists. MCW still helped lead Syracuse, and still put up some impressive guard numbers, while Southerland was gone.

Not to mention March.

This coming year will make the 2nd year in a row that a team from the ACC will play in Maui, host an ACC-B1G challenge game, play a neutral site game in the tri-state area, and won't play a true road game until January. In 2014 you'll be reminded daily that it's Syracuse, and no matter what the quality of wins are in Hawaii and vs. Indiana, the entire story will be no true road game until... In 2013 Duke did the same thing and the fact they had no true road game until 1/12 was barely mentioned. Not hating on Duke's schedule or pumping up SU's, just hating on media dickwads for the inconsistency.

He's simply saying that MCW's stats are inflated by the early season schedule.
Up to Rutgers: 10.1 assists/gm
Rest of season: 5.9

Great player but you can be fooled by his overall stats.

Any idea what our team's FG% in those splits were? I'm not near my computer or I'd look it up myself.

People need to stop using Duke to make this point.

The reason why Duke got a pass last year is because they don't have a reputation built up over years of playing weak OOC schedules like Syracuse does.

This is the key. MCW's assists per game would not have dropped nearly as much if we'd just been able to put the ball in the basket.

Rak's missed dunks. Brandon and James going cold for long stretches. Mike was setting them up. Not his fault we couldn't throw the ball in the ocean.

All true but remember that peoples' opinion of him pretty much followed that trend. People thought he was awesome until BE play. Then a lot thought he sucked and bemoaned the fact that we didn't have an alternative off the bench. That wasn't because the rest of the team wasn't hitting shots. Then he redeemed himself down the stretch. It's OK to say that the real MCW was the good MCW but NBA scouts need to be more circumspect.

Spacing and team shooting % will be better in the NBA. I also think there is nothing inherently wrong with his shot. Whoever drafts him needs to emphasize shooting a bazillion shots everyday. He'll improve.

Sure, but it's likely one could say that about the majority of the top players in college basketball. In particular, MCW's assist numbers really took a hit against conference opponents intent on slowing the pace of the game.

This feels like the kind of draft where if you like anybody there's a chance someone can say you've overrated them.

That always kills me lol. Seems like Rak had at least one missed dunk per game and cost MCW that triple double when he missed one against Arkansas when MCW ended up with 9ast.

Just what does it take to have a "tough" OOC schedule. I know plenty of times in years past, the experts complained about the OOC because Su didn't play top 25 teams early but when you look up the ranking of the OOC. SU was easily in the top 50. Why, because they schedule a lot of decent teams who are at or near the top of their leagues and hardly any who are rate 250 or above. While some teams scheduel a couple top 25 teams but also have 3 or 4 (or more) teams ranked 250 or higher. Which makes a tougher schedule?

we game the system...it still results in a weak schedule and d doesn't fool anyone.

the only difference in the way we do things is a 15-20 point win instead of a 30 point win.

I never understand why people harp on OOC. Why not just look at the schedule as a whole? Is it a tough schedule or not? The SOS data usually shows that Syracuse plays a tough schedule, with plenty of top teams against whom Syracuse usually fairs well. So why do people care about OOC? So what if you beat Louisville on the road(probably the single best win a college team could have last year), not enough of your tough opponents were OOC!

Idiots can't see the forest for the trees!
