Guys,

When our QB went down, most everyone, including our coaches, know that this season was lost. They obviously can't say that, so they said what they needed to say--we can win with Collins, etc. With no serviceable QB to throw, opposing Ds have largely played in the box, making it difficult to run. The loss of QB not only killed our passing game, but it also killed our running game.

This is a lost season. Get the young guys some experience and look forward to next year. I'm betting that FB makes it a priority to have 2 QBs who can throw the ball next year. My guess is Collins is gone; they will get a second QB in the portal and continue to let Carney develop.

This year is tough medicine to swallow for the coaches, players, and fans but I'm hoping next year makes up for it.

1. What is a “lost” season mean? We still should be able to beat UNC and BC. I wouldn’t consider 5-7 to be lost.

2. It shouldn’t be acceptable to have no serviceable QB to throw. Should being on QB2 keep us from some Ws? Yes. Should it make us completely inept on O? No. Hard to get a QB2 in the portal, so this will likely be an issue next year as well.

What is the mystery around having a backup QB that doesn’t lose us games?

And honestly, looking back to last year or this season, say McCord went down as well or whatever, my expectation isn’t that we have McCord 2 or Angeli 2 ready to go. My expectation is that, at a minimum, #2 isn’t someone that’s going to lose us games, They don’t have to be someone that wins them, but they shouldn’t be erratic turnover machines. And we should be able to call a game that, at a minimum works to their strengths. We’ve had winning seasons with guys like Terrel Hunt, Kevin Mason, RJ and Shrader that weren’t setting the world on fire passing like McCord but they also weren’t shooting us in the foot on practically every drive.

I don’t think that’s a lot to ask for. Fran isn’t even delivering that right now. The season lost stuff after Angeli is just an excuse. We should never be in a position to have to rely on what we are right now.

Football is way too hard a game physically for coaches to throw up their hands and quit trying to win - continuing to play Collins qualifies. If the coaches quit trying, they have no right to expect the players to keep trying anyway.

“We’re gunna get our teeth kicked in every week, but at least you young guys will get some game experience!” qualifies as the worst motivational message a coach could communicate to his team. I don’t even care if they lose just as bad with different guys at QB, and if they eventually decide to try the facility janitor out for the heck of it. You cannot communicate to the team you aren’t trying to win games - continuing to play Collins does just that.

few teams have 2 guys who can play at a high level. Many teams have none. Some big time teams have no real QB. Right FSU. I mean Texas is barely getting by with the Goat at QB

Agree, poor choice of words with "lost." What I really meant to say was that when our QB went down, the coaches realized that we were likely going to have QB issues which would not leave us with much margin of error in our remaining games. I honestly think we're playing more not to lose than playing to win--conservative play calling, etc.

Good backup QBs are going to be very hard to keep for any college team. Gone are the days of having a Hurts and a Tua on the same roster. Backups now find playing time and a starting job wherever they can—and even PSU’s backup looked like hot garbage, despite their nearly unlimited resources.

When Fran was hired, we knew what we were getting: the best recruiter in the nation paired with a brand-new head coach. Mistakes were bound to happen. We got lucky last year with McCord and winning almost all of our coin-flip games. Now, it becomes a bigger issue if those mistakes aren’t addressed.

Defense is getting fixed because we went out and got Dr. Blitz. On the other hand, Fran might benefit from a “Head Coach whisperer” to help with game management. That said, he does hold himself accountable, and I genuinely question whether the end-of-first-half issues were entirely on him—or if Nixon was pushing too hard.

Time will tell how Fran performs long-term, but I’m still happy he’s our head coach.

what would people do as the OC with a qb who struggles and an oline that cant run block at all and barely hold up to pass rush? This isnt about play calling, we can barely function on any play that isnt first read

We don’t need a good backup. We just need a serviceable one. We can have a Mahoney, a Welch, a Rex, an Morgan and win a few games. Certainly UNC and BC this year. Sadly we do not have that and fear we won’t next year either.

Also we can get a decent HS kid like we did with TD who can get a drive or two as a Frosh and then compete for QB1 in year 2.

If we want to run the ball, Fran will need to find another offensive line coach.
We need some people who understand the oline to explain what is really going wrong

Talent vs execution vs strength. Its somewhere in there to figure out.

If I was a guy who made a living getting people to click to my site I would go find someone who does understand this stuff and ask for a talk and film review. Kinda like the old BC coach.

This system has worked with two guys, neither of which are day one or two picks. You shouldn’t need to lead the country in passing, but you shouldn’t be able to put multiple players on the field that can execute. Carney may be one of them, just not yet.

You don’t need two McCords, just a second guy that can play at a 80% level. Collins is playing at 10%

QB runs. WR runs.

A head coach whisperer? Maybe Phil Martelli or Seth Greenberg would be available to help Fran out.

Serviceable just barely for most of those guys. Most had around a 50-55% comp rate and just about a 1:1 TD:INT ratio.
Sure Mahoney had some "magic" in him.
Rex never won a game
Morgan never won a game
Welch did beat Wake
Mahoney beast BC (shared a win against CMU)

So by few if you mean 2 sure...
We've not had a good backup since Dungey year one

Sure if we get a real serviceable backup it would be good and we might have one on the roster, lots and lots of youth on the team.

A senior football person that could help with advice etc
So call it a senior advisory if you have issues with coach whisper lol

Honestly o line with Angeli and o line with Collins 2 different issues. We had more holes with Angelina cause we could throw the ball. Collins they are stacking box cause it’s 50/50 he throws to the defense. They can stack box easily. 6guys blocking 7 or 7 blocking 8 doesn’t generally work well.

I get what you are saying, and it’s mostly true, but for the last 15 years (except the last 2), I’ve watched a completely one dimensional Rutgers teams run the ball fairly efficiently against stacked boxes (with less mobile QBs than Collins), because for years they could not throw at all. With better/more adaptable coaching, we could do better. Somehow I feel Marrone would have beat at least 1 of SMU or Pitt with this team.

All of those guys would have us functional. We can't keep going 100 yards of total O through 3 Qs against mediocre teams. That is what Rickie gives us. Our QB2 should have us functional. It isn't realistic to expect more than that (outside of the true Frosh one series a game type).

steve angeli was the back up QB at ND. having a competent prepared back-up at the most key position on your roster isn't a luxury , it's a necessity . evidently our staff didn't get the memo.
