Overthinking

I am as frustrated as everyone on here but the coaching staff did all they could to upgrade the QB position. They went out and got Collins, a highly touted recruit from a blueblood program. He obviously hasn't worked out.
That is the thing with young QBs. They can have all the skills in the world, look good in practice, but you don't know what you have until they get game experience. For Rickie, the coaching staff knew after the Spring game that he probably wasnt QB1 material and grabbed Angeli. They recruited a talented QB in Carney. What else could they have done?
Now, we can argue about giving Carney a shot (I'm solidly in that camp). We can criticize playcalling and coaching. But what else could the staff have done to get a good QB in here? We are not paying for a Mensah to walk through the door. The staff took a shot on a young QB with a ton of skills but it hasn't worked out.

There are only 4 guys in the country who have thrown more INTs than Collins. They range in attempts from 190 to 303. Collins has 127.

Closest comparison is the ODU QB who has thrown the same number of INTs (8). He has 173 attempts. He's also thrown for 16 TDs.

So, in conclusion, there is no comparison for what we're seeing.

Yes, our OL has played below average as well, it doesn't help.

Collins is horrible. And he is going to keep getting worse if he keeps playing, considering the jump up in competition coming in these next 4-5 weeks , minus Coach Creepy Hoodie

I still say that it comes down to coaching. Nixon refuses to accept that Collins cannot do what Angeli/McCord could. He understood to call different plays with Carney. Not sure why he cannot with Collins.

Our best position group is receiver and we are not getting the ball into their hands any way we can. Pena runs the ball a few times a game for Penn State. He ran the ball for us last year. Are you telling me that we cannot work something like that into out arsenal--fake the handoff to Willis and give it to a WR?

Collins is CLEARLY a good runner. We need to use that to our advantage from time to time. If they have to start spying on him, that will help open up the run/pass game a little. Use what you have. Even including sacks, he is averaging almost as much per rush as Willis/Nixon. And he had that long run called back and the sack yardage. He needs to be rushing for 50-75 yards per game to move the chains.

In the meantime, we had a reduced playbook with Carney and he was 2 for 3, including fielding a ground ball snap and getting it out of bounds without a penalty. 5 yard passes are better than incompletions. And certainly better than interceptions.

Serviceable just barely for most of those guys. Most had around a 50-55% comp rate and just about a 1:1 TD:INT ratio.
Sure Mahoney had some "magic" in him.
Rex never won a game
Morgan never won a game
Welch did beat Wake
Mahoney beast BC (shared a win against CMU)

So by few if you mean 2 sure...
We've not had a good backup since Dungey year one

Sure if we get a real serviceable backup it would be good and we might have one on the roster, lots and lots of youth on the team.
I had to Google Welch to remember him.

Probably the wrong thread for this, but just realized there's a difference between "Dislike" and "Don't Like"

Guys,

When our QB went down, most everyone, including our coaches, know that this season was lost. They obviously can't say that, so they said what they needed to say--we can win with Collins, etc. With no serviceable QB to throw, opposing Ds have largely played in the box, making it difficult to run. The loss of QB not only killed our passing game, but it also killed our running game.

This is a lost season. Get the young guys some experience and look forward to next year. I'm betting that FB makes it a priority to have 2 QBs who can throw the ball next year. My guess is Collins is gone; they will get a second QB in the portal and continue to let Carney develop.

This year is tough medicine to swallow for the coaches, players, and fans but I'm hoping next year makes up for it.

Incredibly disappointing that our QB1 goes down when we were looking at an unexpectedly good season. But maybe this shouldn't come as a surprise since we have lost our QB1 in (what?) 7 of our last 9 seasons. I think we lost QB1 and QB2 a couple of times. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the worst string of QB misfortune in all of FBS. If we just had average injury rate, we would have won a bunch more games.

And then there is the second biggest disappointment; that our 4* transfer from a top 10 program is far below expectations. Remember the 3 or 4 QB2 we played against last season who all seemed better than their QB1s - that would not be us.

I don't think there is a common cause for this, mostly just bad luck.

Dungey and Shrader ran a lot so injuries are expected.

Most teams have QB2 start a game at some point. We probably have more season Enders than normal. But QB2 playing should be expected.

You can't declare a season lost when there are 8 games left.

We had 8 chances to get 3 wins and keep the bowl streak going.

Now we have 5 chances to get 3 wins.

Coaches better get to to coaching. Players better get to playing.

You have no chance if Fran continues to trot Rickie out there. The rest of the team has to be wondering why for 3 consecutive weeks the staff continues to send Rickie out there?
And they continue to get the same results where he either throws interceptions, or throws behind his receivers, or so far away they can't catch it.
