P. Thomas combine results

Phil is in real trouble. He's going to have to finish very strong to have a shot.

Whether you believe all these metrics are useful, it isn't good that he is getting whipped.

What does being able to bench 225 pounds multiple times have to do with being a good CB? This drill is way overblown
Mike Mayock take it away:

Bench press
The bench press is a test of strength -- 225 pounds, as many reps as the athlete can get. What the NFL scouts are also looking for is endurance. Anybody can do a max one time, but what the bench press tells the pro scouts is how often the athlete frequented his college weight room for the last 3-5 years.

If I was an NFL GM (most likely running the team into the ground with my decision making) I wouldn't necessarily look at some of the results as a direct guide to on the field performance. However, when you go to the combine you know what you are going to be tested on and you should have an idea what you need to personally work on. You also have the time to improve your numbers. If you get to the combine and have a poor result it might show more about your maturity level or your inner desire to push yourself to the level that is required to play in the NFL. If I was a GM, that is what I would take from the results.

by my untrained eye, he looked pretty good in the back pedal, hip turn and go get the football drill. heard 1 coach on the field yell "well done".

I think he is a late round pick. Kid has good upside hasnt taken any punishment is young etc...

I like the combine more or less, but one of the guys who works for ESPN Radio down here in Dallas (who is actually the voice of the Mavs and most famously had the "DO IT LIVE!!!" meltdown) put it best: just watch the freaking games. He was talking specifically about the LB from BC, whose name escapes me, when he said something wondering what a few timed drills will tell you about the kid you shouldn't already know from watching him, and seeing how he averaged 3 more tackles per game than any other LB in the country, regarding his ability to track down the ball carrier.

The interview and measurements are about the only REALLY important things at the combine. Jerry freaking Rice only ran a 4.7 at the combine.

Press coverage.

The LB from BC is Keuchly, and I believe he led the nation in tackles per game in 2010 (I watched him play in and ACC game because BC was on the SU schedule last year and the ACC announcers said he was the leading tackler in the nation). Sure enough in that game and then later in the SU game the kid was in the picture or around the ball on every play and credited with heaps of tackles.

The only issue I have with watching P. Thomas in the games is the number of personal foul calls for his late hits and the inordinate number of close calls where he made contact that could have been interpreted as a late hit and wasn't. If I'm picking a DB in the late rounds I might not pick the guy who has a tendency to cost his team 15 yards.

Or you like his aggressiveness and believe you can teach him not to draw penalties easier than teaching aggressiveness.

Gotta love Coop. He used to be a voter in the AP football poll and provided play-by-play for lots of college games (football & hoops). He's all Mavs now.

Bill O'Reilly is the voice of the Mavs? You can't explain that

That's what I thought, too. Maybe there's two of them?

If their are more famous meltdowns than Bill O, I feel I need to see them! Those youtube clips of him are epic.

Tough Day for Thomas at Combine.
Phillip Thomas had more time to prepare for the NFL Combine than most players considering he was suspended for Syracuse’s last two games of the 2011 season before making the jump to the professional ranks. It appeared as if he didn’t take the advantage of the time come Tuesday, when the defensive backs worked out for NFL scouts.

Sure, I like his aggressiveness. And if he is 1st round talent or maybe even the early rounds I will take the risk and work on his decision-making. But if he is a later round pick I might be less willing and choose to go with a similar athlete without the risk.

I wasn't disagreeing with you at all - just kind of joking around that these general managers interpret the same information in different ways. Not that they shouldn't

Wow that is really bad. You have to wonder what type of strength training they are doing up there. Max bench is probably around 350 or so. No wonder we couldnt run the ball for ****.

He was probably our 2nd best lineman last year so you could be on to something. He did well enough on anyone right in front of him though.

I think the bigger issue with him was getting him down from the ~400 lbs he showed up on campus at. He was always going to be in game "strong enough" so there were other things that likely took precedent over bench press.

Yeah, and it's way too complicated for me to make a general statement like I have here. There are so many variables and factors that play into a GM's decision. I wish P. Thomas the best for sure.

Agreed, He did have legs like tree trunks. His issue was his weight, certainly not being a 4 year player at a major program hurt him. At the JC level he could probably lean against people and move him back. Still though, pretty bad
