PAC-12 and Big XII want playoff expansion

I’d like to see the 5 conference champs and three highest at large teams. It’s good for the P5 and the other conferences.

Agree with this 100%.

The champion has to end up winning 3 straight really, really good games. Would be an incredible feat.

Six. Power 5 plus one. 3-6 play at higher seeds first.

One of the G5 teams will be guaranteed a spot.

This is what will happen next contract negotiation.

I agree. I said this from the first day they announced a four team playoff, that eventually they would go to 8. It only makes sense that each conference champ gets in, and then at large teams, so Notre Dame doesn't have to join the ACC and can keep their national schedule.

If (and this is a big IF) the playoffs are expanded to 8, I would hope the G5 spot is only guaranteed if they are considered Top 10 by whatever ranking system for the CFP is in place at that time. Also, there should be a limit of 2 from any one conference. Last year, three B1G teams would have made it otherwise.

Cheers,
Neil

If they want to, the NCAA and schools can make it work, scheduling-wise (it is particularly easy if they drop the "missed class time" hypocrisy). The issue is that the current contract runs through 2025. Without a renegotiation of the contract, 8 (or 6) teams won't happen for at least 8 years.

The SEC and BIG should love this. It virtually assures them of getting Bama and OSU in there no matter what. The BIG would have 2 teams every cycle, barring monumental collapses (see Michigan). ;)

And with a year like this year it would certainly benefit the ACC as well, considering Miami, Clemson, NC State, and the step child ND, who is potentially stealing an ACC spot at this point.

Gotta be in it to win it.

Hoping Wisconsin runs the table and takes out the Buckeyes this year. No OSU or PSU would be phenomenal.

to go to 8 teams they are going to have to move the schedule up a week

If it did go to eight keep the semi's and title games in the rotation neutral sites but the 1st round should be home games for the higher seeded team

They could play the quarterfinals on the first day bowls are played. This year, that would be the 16th of December, or even the 23rd. Semis would be on the 30th or January 1st. Then the NC game on the 8th, as scheduled.

they would be an option as well

I would like see 8 with auto bids. Unfortunately, it would likely end any chance of ND football joining the ACC. It could also bring some stability to P5 Conferences as there would be less of a need for schools to jump conferences, especially if it would break up XII.

I was never a fan of ND partial membership, whether in theBE or the ACC. If this occurs and the chance of ND joining for football goes to zero, does it make sense to keep them in the league? The ACC has shown in the last couple of years how strong it is, I would hope viewership is up, and we would will hopefully get a big boost in payout once the ACCN starts up. Why let ND potentially get a bowl slot from another team/league? I like ND basketball, but doubt it is as much of a draw. Let them out the rest of their teams in a desperate league like the XII.

Remember when some people here guaranteed ND would end up joining the ACC? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

The Conferences could push ND’s buttons and exclude them now and push them to join a Confernce. I highly doubt that will happen though. IMO, they will eventually go to 8 for ND so they can stay independant, include one team from the Group of 5 when appropriate, and will open one or more spots for P5 Confernce Teams depending on ND or Go5 team making it in. More $’s.

^^if the P5 champs get auto bids, I think that makes ND MORE likely to join. That or when they end up with one loss this year and get left out of the playoff.

No, no, and NO! If they go to 8 teams, PAC 12 and Big 12 teams will have no incentive to toughen their SOS and ND will never fully join the ACC.

It's what's going to happen. Get used to it.

Cut a game down to 11, and get rid of the FCS opponent for week 1.
That probably won't happen because the D-1A teams like the win and the D-1AA teams like the money. It drives me crazy that UVA is paying for Richmond's and W&M's athletic programs.

Well, at least they both said, "Thank you" with an L.

Oh wait...

;)

Hate it, even though its probably inevitable. ND should not have some special status in the ACC. The agreement currently in place at least leaves the possibility that they'll be forced to join. Take away that incentive and their parasitic relationship w/ the ACC goes on forever.
Also, its more likely that we'll have the super conference 4X16 model that folks have talked about, but only if we stay at 4 teams. The Big XII is ripe for the picking, but expansion to 8 teams takes away that possibility. Its no coincidence that the 2 conferences advocating expansion are the PAC12 and the Big12, they're the ones most vulnerable to being left out!
