Pace Postgame

The last 10 minutes were what we were expecting from this team.

Kingz and Kiyan both showed flashes of impressive skill sets (as far as scoring).

Souare brought energy

White was everything we hoped for. Kyle did just what was expected on offense. Still would like to see more on defense as a rim protector (Freeman too)

Betseys stroke looked so smooth the other day and then he disappeared today.

Through two games, George has been a disappointment as far as getting in the paint and setting people up.

One concern that I had today is we played a lot of five out and still struggled to get to the basket in those sets. We did better getting to the hoop when we weren’t running that action.

Biggest concerns going forward would have to be rim protection and free throws.
We got better results when they didn’t stand around and watch in those actions. They started cutting and driving off those actions in the last ten minutes and we no longer settled.

I have more concerns with our guards and wings than I do with our four bigs. I thought the bigs played well tonight. Betsy was shut out tonight and George didn’t score from the field. I thought tonight was the best I’ve seen Donnie play. He attracted the basket and didn’t just settle from the perimeter. Impressed with Freeman and Kyle’s passing. They made some excellent passes tonight. I can live with ten turnovers, but you shouldn’t get out-rebounded by Pace. We did turn them over 23 times. The lefty point guard is a good defensive player and handles it ok. He’s better than I thought. He can handle himself ok.
The defensive end for the bigs will kill us against good teams

I couldn't watch the game... I don't want to worry to much or watch a replay... can this just be chalked up to it being an exhibition game and once the games count, we should be better?

As long as everyone stayed healthy and there wasn't anything glaring, I'm going to wait to worry until we get to the regular season.

Still worried about the coaching. We did not come out ready to match the intensity, the offense looks rough and the defense in the first half looked like more of the same with better athletes.

I did not see the game but looking at the stats: (1) 24% from 3? (2) 50% on FTs? (3) Too many turnovers. I know it’s a preseason game but if we have stats like that against quality competition victories will be hard to achieve.

Appreciate the note -- that is concerning. JJ do ok with shot selection?

I really just don’t understand the intensity aspect. It’s not hard to see and shouldn’t be for anyone on the staff or any of the kids. You see what Sadiq brings and it’s what you find in nearly every player on the floor for any team with big goals.

Still going to play pickup with a bunch of fellow 40 somethings and the intensity level of those games feels higher than some of what we see under Red.

I don’t blame Red for that first half at all. These are semi pro players, they need to be more self motivated. I play harder in my men’s rec league.
You're right.
These guys are being paid to play.
That means they're being paid to play hard.
There no excuse - NONE - for doing less than than they could.

No defending the lack of effort and toughness on both ends early on, it was terrible, but I'm not sure how Pace was planning to make it 40 mins with how they were playing really. We need to be able to play through contact and get tougher especially when the other team is going to play handsy fouling all game. We've seen this story before with playing down the to the competition even in the late Boeheim years. I dont' think we were even sweating, just going through the motions.

You can see the bright spots though. Had to check back to see and Pace scored only 1 point over 7 mins of game time in the 2nd half when the fouls caught up to them and we played hard and they ran out of steam. I'm not sure we did anything different just played tougher D and pounded it inside. Same pace guys from earlier in the game just we were half awake.

I believe we have 9 ACC level players overall and for sure 7 any given day. Last year we had about 2-3 ACC caliber players any given game. Now someone's gotta light a fire under their asses and figure out the real rotations.

I don't think they were that bad. It's the guards who are failing to stay in front of their players. They don't keep anyone out of the lane. Not just JJ, but Kingz and George were letting guys get by them, too.

Zephyr was hounding people out there, which is probably why he got time and Luke Fennell didn't. Kiyan wasn't bad on the defensive end and played with effort. Took a few bad shots, but made some nice ones, too.

They took too many threes, and missed most of them. Most were not particularly good shots. We started pounding them inside in the last 10 minutes or so, and went on a 17-1 that put us in control. But up to that point, they were too perimeter oriented, and weren't taking advantage of their athleticism. Taking too many lazy shots, not good ones.

That first half was nonsense. They didn’t play hard. Didnt respect the opponent and things were said at halftime that needed to be said. They got the message and they came out and played hard the way they should.

Sadiqs ability on the pick and roll to have that explosive of a dunk so quickly was best play of the game. Kiyan is proving he’s the real deal as well. The kid is good.

The offense needs an identity. It’s that simple. Kingz needs to do what he did in the last 10 mins if this team is going to play well. Lots to work on but we see what they are capable of, but that first half was a joke on their part
