Custis, wow where did that come from? Babers isn't saying it's aliens but, it's aliens.

The one handed grab and shake and bake for a TD, that was high end stuff.

If Butler doesn't play again I'd be fine with that. Quit on a couple of go routes where he could have had the ball, 0 for 8 targets.

Riley 0 for 3.

Both had drops.

Awful performance by those two.

You play Cisco and Williams on defense, play some kids on the offense as well.

Almost seems like Babers is letting Butler and Riley shoot themselves in the foot by playing themselves out of starting. Hope the Wagner game shows us a WR that can make plays to help Custis.

Glad I wasn't the only one who was wondering why Butler stopped running or slowed on those GO Routes. The two blatant drops had too much heat on them but still he should have caught the one.

On both of them he broke past the DB but then just floated instead of sprinting. That's a bad habit that has to be coached out of him.

Thoughts?

In a game where we needed experienced players to step up, if even just for a new QB, these two showed nothin in my opinion. Pierce looked mediocre. Custis, Moe and Dontae did it all.

Whos going to start pushing these two for snaps?

My father and I talked about this very subject last night after the game. Time to see what S. Johnson, Queeley, and Harris can do.

Butler is a 3rd or 4th guy, at best. Riley should have been recruited over by now. Complimentary piece of the puzzle, nothing more than a spot contributor.

1 player from the WR unit caught a ball last night. Granted, Custis was spectacular, but holy smokes.

This is the key -- definintely not how this offense (or any offense, to be honest) is designed. Need more help.

Its clear as day Butler and Riley aren't the answer. I am sure one of them will have a big game this year ala Riley vs CMU but at this point we have like a dozen WRs on the roster so lets see some of them. Lets get Lutz in the slot, Harris, and Hendrix in the rotation outside as well, not to mention Queeley and Johnson. So many young guys its ridiculous we stuck with Butler and Riley for pretty much the entire game. Kudos to Custis for stepping up but my god that was otherwise an embarrassing performance as RF pointed out. We need to see a shake up for Wagner, Harris and Queeley at minimum need to see major minutes.

Totally agree with that. Butler and Riley have proven themselves unreliable as WR's in game situations. It's to the point that playing them sets a poor example. The guys who deserve PT are the ones who can catch it when the lights are on.

Snaps not minutes...this ain't no basketball team!

Both Johnsons, Queeley, Harris, and Hendix when he is better. Devon simply cant catch the ball and isnt a gamer. Riley is serviceable at best.

Job competitions should definitely be going on in the WR spot. Let's wait to see how Nykeim looks once he's healthy (he was in pads and walking around on the field during the WMU game) but all the young guns vs. Butler should be going on during the Wagner game. Custis I think is too big and too fast to not utilize in the future, plus I think he's a smart player that's just been riddled with injuries. Also, we're definitely saving all those plays to Ravian for the FSU game.

Butler and Riley were not good. Butler quit on several routes especially the long ball from DeVito. Riley is well, not good. Teams will now concentrate on Custis so OC needs to find solid #2 and #3 and it isn't these two.

Coaches, players, posters, etc., were talking up Butler pretty hard going into yesterday. Perhaps it was our secondary and/or Scoop he was going against in practice making him look better?

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like it would be easy for a new WR to work into an offense. Learn your routes and catch the ball when its thrown to you. If it isn't thrown to you look to block down field.

Dino should use next week as the final test for these guys who played yesterday.
Don’t waste 1 of the 4 games on RS against Wagner for the WRs.
Next week is it for Devin C. Butler, Riley to show what they can do as WRs.

If they struggle next week start using the clock on the Freshman against Florida State. In a game we have nothing to lose and chance for them to pop.

I think he just had a really bad game.

The dude caught 33 passes last season. That's not nothing.

I hope you're right but I did not like his running or lack of running down the ball on the longer passes or his hands. It was one odd night.

Yeah, armchair psychology here, but I think that first drop messed with his head and things snowballed.

But he's had so many drops.

This offense has such a low margin of error, they can't afford to play a guy who's 70/30 to make a catch, especially given Dungey's occasional inaccuracy.

Agree with the Nykiem comment. I think he becomes our quick twitch receiver who will make some serious plays once he is healthy.

Agreed. I'm hopeful last night was just an outlier.

Butler had several drops, but i dont know if more than 1 of them was on an actual well thrown/spotted ball. Still needs to make those catches, but we probably missed 2-3 deep balls that were not well thrown to open guys. WM deep balls much easier to complete with 3-5 yds of space to run into, seems like our deep balls are always too far.
