Paying Top Athletes

Reasons that this would never happen.
1. The revenue sports support the non-revenue sports. You think Title IX was bad for these sports.
2. What would happen to girl's sports?
3. How would facilities be updated? (all by donations?)
4. Separation between state schools and private schools.
5. What about the schools in states that have no state income tax?
6. What incentive would students have to go to a less paying school?
7. Would coaching pay (including assistants) become astronomically high?

Suggestions for paying student-athletes.
1. Free education for life from any institution in the system. (Trade school, Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate)- Emphasizes student part.
2. Free medical for life.
3. Increasing salary for each year played. Invested and distributed upon leaving college (only for revenue sports). Incentive to stay longer.

Ex: 1st year - $15,000 2nd year - $20,000 3rd year - $30,000 4th year - $40,000 5th year - $45,000

So a redshirt senior when he graduates would have $150,000 invested for their future, free medical for life, and a endless free education.

As was pointed out on the sports shows tonight, the only universities that want this pay for play are the top 25. They are a small minority of the ~ 150 D-1.

How about paying players based solely on revenue directly generated from their likenesses (i.e. merchandise like jerseys)? They wouldn't get the whole thing, but a standardized percentage (10 or 15% perhaps). Just an idea. This way, players who don't really contribute to the revenue generated by the team aren't being compensated beyond their free education and the star players aren't being exploited as badly. I'm sure there are drawbacks to this.

And not until they are out of school for a couple years... I could see that as a possible. I still don't think it will happen.

Schools might just end up not selling jerseys with numbers on them? And then I guess you could get into stuff like older players who wear the same number, say McCollough or something wears #15, who is to say people are buying it cause he did or cause Melo wore it?

It's an interesting idea. I like the thought process behind it; I know they are getting a free education, but there is so much money being made off the backs of these kids.

Then schools with the crazy/richest boosters would make sure their school's athletes got paid the most to influence recruiting.

Good thing we have that nipped in the bud under the current system

Not saying it is, but we don't wanna open the flood gates either. How much would Phil Knight pay for the "likeness" of Oregon's top athletes? How much would SU's largest donor pay?

Yeah, I get waht you're saying.

At the same time, I'm almost not sure it would bother me. It doesn't bother me in pro sports. Different ball of wax, I know.

There's no real easy answer to the paying the athletes issue.
