6.27 yards per play offense
4.68 yards per play defense

in 2011, that would've worked out to 22nd in the country on offense and 13th in the country on defense. if you're top 25 in both, you're going to have an awesome record. 0-1 is just a fluke. last year bama WVU and so miss were the only teams top 25 in both

when you see that many points on the board, it's hard to convince yourself the defense was good even if you know that lots of the scores weren't their fault at all. amazing that the defense was actually better than the offense per play. (not taking a thing away from the offense, yards are what matters most, not how many plays it takes)

the defense is pretty good though - we should be pleased overall with them.

if you have the advantage in yards per play, move quick and get more plays. saturday was clearly a good argument for thinking that speeding up helps our offense much more than it hurts our defense. i think defensive depth and marcus sales make marrone so much more confident.

Agree 100%, really look forward to getting Flemming and Lemon back for the Big east. Just get to 2-2 heading in

I think the numbers might be a little skewed with how much Syracuse had to throw after they got down by 22. With that said, the numbers are very encouraging. If they can cut down on the turnovers and improve the kick coverage, they should have a solid season.

definitely. can't really project much from this. how often does a team with those per play numbers lose? one in a hundred? if this were a season i was really invested in, i'd be beside myself.

They were down last year against lesser teams and still couldn't put up anything close to those numbers. I personally don't think NW is all that great but as I said, we weren't able to put up those kind of numbers against anyone lately (Toldeo, Maine, RI, Akron, etc).

When I get a chance i will run some stats to show how well teams do when they have those kind of per play numbers.

have we ever won a game the way NW just did getting outgained so bad?

i can't think of any game that comes even remotely close. even games where we had huge punt returns (riddle vs va tech) the yards weren't that lopsided

Get to 2-2, and I think we'll reel off three straight victories in BE play in October.

I actually thought that the defense was great. NW really only scored on two worth-while drives. Yes, the defense blew it at the end, but the game should not have ever gotten that close, and, even then, the push out of bounds call was a terrible call. I don't want to give the defense a free pass on that drive, but, with a better call, the game could have been very different.

going back to around 1959. Syracuse when the home team has had 75 games where the had a play avg above 6 on offense. We lost 4 times.. 71-4... think about that..

away we are 36-13

we are 100-35 when holding teams to under 5 per play at home.

away we are 73-45..

at home su is 48-2 when having a off per play gt 6 and also 1.5 yds per play better than the D. it has been 30 years since we last lost with that kind of number.

unbelievable. thanks for those stats. i bet we've never won when the yardage is flipped

We should be throwing the ball 50 times a game anyways.
