"Don’t expect the Atlantic Coast Conference to make any sudden moves. It was out of character for the league to grow to 14 colleges to become the largest major conference in football in the country. Unless a university of tangible financial value surfaces (Notre Dame or Texas), the A.C.C. will stay at 14 for the near future. There is little chance it will add UConn or Rutgers anytime soon, unless it is to complement a college of significant football value.
University presidents do not mind leaving leagues so bludgeoned that they need tourniquets, but killing one would be frowned upon. The only people who do not realize this are UConn officials, who are tripping over themselves to leak stories about their unhappiness with the Big East, which hurts that league’s efforts to look stable and expand. But UConn, which has no athletic director and a new president, may have nowhere to go. Because most realignment decisions are driven by football, joining Massachusetts in the Mid-American Conference could be UConn’s best available option at this point."

LOL that article is hilarious and sad in the same breath. If UConn best bet is to go to the MAC they might as well become a basketball only. No chance the Big East to the MAC. I mean a league of UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida, East Carolina, Rutgers, Central Florida etc. is a LOT better than the MAC. This article is unbelievable, but Herbst said UConn was being sought after?

I'm fairly certain Thamel was kidding with that.

He probably is kidding but that fact that he would make that joke and for it to not be immediately obvious whether he believes this or not says a lot about the position that they are in.

"For the 2012 and 2013 football seasons, the Big East will have 10 members. Pittsburgh and Syracuse will leave in June 2014."

What ???

I re-read the complaint tonight that UConn et al. filed against the ACC, Miami and BC in 2003. It was incredibly spiteful and nasty, essentially calling Donna Shalala a liar and re-hashing the BC gambling scandal. Even though Virginia Tech and Pitt signed off as plaintiffs, it was clearly an effort led by UConn, and I have to believe that Shalala and DeFilippo have long enough memories that the chances of UConn gaining entry to the ACC are slim at best, notwithstanding the efforts by UConn fans to whitewash the past.
