It's interesting that you bring up WWII. I googled his wiki page and Gerhard grew up in Germany during the war and his father was a German Army officer. I bet he has some interesting stories to tell. And hopefully someone interviews him, if they haven't already, before it's too late.

My Grandfather fought in the Argonne forest in France vs.the Germans in the First World War. He received a Purple Heart, but many of his battalion and company mates were killed. I always regret that I never asked him about his war experience.

As a little kid when we went to visit, we were not allowed to make any noise (6 kids 4-11 years old), had to sit quietly in a room with heavy velvet curtains and one little table lamp. As I look back, he was a very broken man.
