Class of 2023 PG Dajuan "DJ" Wagner Jr (NJ) Portal from Arkansas

This seems more like something Red would do …

Just not sure Wagner makes sense for our roster

This is the thing it is about roster fit. You need shooters at least 2 of your PG, SG, SF needs to be knock down shooters. Currently all the data says our SGs arent that so then our PG and SF need to be. The SF we signed is a massive first step but needs to be paired with a PG that can shoot from deep as well.

Can Doty and Anthony improve? Sure but why count on that when you can go get a proven shooter at the point now. If the do improve and become knock down shooters as well then we are cooking with gas.

Building a roster that complements each other is important.

I think you can get away with one guard that isn't a good shooter.

Hard to say how many of those we'll have.
Particularly if they're the on ball guy and your off ball guys are the shooters.

I would also mention he actually shot 54% on 2's and 33% on 3's in SEC play (and 59% and 37% respectively after moving to a super sub role). The former isnt great by any means but it's okay enough and the latter is legitimately good (but would again warn that it's only about half a season of good production).

Will give him a full scouting if we actually end up with him, but there's at least an argument to be made that he could be a good option.

I believe that Doty is a much better shooter than his 3pt% suggests. He’s 83.6% on FTs for his career and shot 85.8% last year. He also shot 46% on non-paint 2s and took over 4 3pa per game, including 12 vs Duke. Year to year 3pt percentage is pretty variable bc the sample sizes are small, but Dotys all around shooting numbers and his willingness to take 3s are both indicators that he’s not your average 32% 3pt shooter

Agree. But Doty has improved from deep each year. That can continue.

Also, coming into college, Kiyan was known for his range. He just needs to get his confidence back.

Let's also add that GMAC signed a kid who shot 49% in FIBA U18.
He shot around 30% from 3 in high school. Was more of a mid-range shooter/free throw merchant. Agreed on Doty and 3M though.

Like I said I am all for improvement and the “magical” he is better than he has shown bit. But you can’t rely on that is my point and if it happens even better and it would be an extreme bonus to the team.

Hasn't been graded yet, but On3 has him as a 4 star with a 94.12 rating and the current 45th overall player. Will probably end up just inside or outside of the top 100 when it's all said and done. That may be conservative and he ends up not dropping much with more entries.
good research there

For reference, 94 rating last year would have slotted him in between 41-85 in the portal rankings. George was a 94 last year (albeit slightly higher 94).

Not sure where you’re getting your numbers from. He was 29% in conference according to cbb reference. He was 58% on 2’s.

Guessing there's some funkiness between Conference Schedule and total games against conference opponents but if you go to his splits on cbb reference you can scroll down and see his numbers against SEC teams

DJ Wagner is 10x the defender that George is.
Not much to really back that up except feelings. Evan Miya has Wagner as a significantly worse player than George. If he was on our team this year he would have been about our 4th best player. If we are moving on from George and have money I EXPECT a significant upgrade at that position. Not a lateral move or downgrade. That is what this is.

In the end I don't think it matters because the word on socials is he ends up at Memphis.

That's fair. Insane as it sounds, $1 to $1.5 million isn't a lot to pay for a player like Wagner in this current landscape, so if we can get him for that I feel it's a great add, but you make solid points.

OK - which Pro team would you like them for? I'll assume the Spurs?
Not a Spurs fan, but they were non-American guards who really understood how to play the game. Would love to get more Euros/Brazilian guys. Would give us a leg up as a team to understand basketball.

If he comes to us without breaking the bank, then why not when we need to fill out the roster? He’s a great kid who has been positive through all the ups and downs of a top ranked player. He’s been composed playing under pressure and under the spotlight and might thrive under the lower lights of Syracuse.
