I am a huge fan and supporter of Syracuse Women's basketball and Coach Jack! I have been trying to articulate some of the concerns that I see with our recruiting, but in all fairness to the program, all is not gloom and doom, there are some positives. Here are my thoughts: In the last 3 recruiting cycles. Coach Jack and staff have brought 3-4 players rated in the ESPN top 100, with the incoming class having the highest rated player at #48!!. It is really a shame that we lost Latham last year because she would have been a key piece to what Coach jack hopes to build. Let's take a look at the roster as it projects for next year. The biggest needs will be replacing our tallest players at 6-4 and 6-3. Based on the the current roster for next year, we have one player at 6-3 and that is it; all other players are 6-2 (Sophie Burrows), and the rest are 6-1 or shorter. This doesn't bode well for success in the ACC. If we can bring in 2- 3 players 6-3 or taller, who can rebound and provide us with an inside scoring option, then our roster could be competitive.
Camdyn Nelson appears to be an athletic, quick point guard with some scoring punch, that would be a nice addition to our roster. Sophie Burrows, at 6-2, looks like the heir apparent to replace Georgia Woolley.
Maddy Potts has already demonstrated that she is a really good set and shoot 3 point artist with a great upside, especially if she can develop a dribble drive pull up game. Point guard looks like a position that will be subjected to a platoon with Angelica Velez, the highly regarded portal transfer from NYC via LSU.
Based on her rankings, I was quite honestly expecting more from her by way of scoring, but she appears to be showing more flashes as the season has progressed. Olivia Schmidt, the shortest player on the roster, has some upside as well, she pushes the ball and helps get our transition game going. I looked at a lot of her HS tape and she was a very good 3 point shooter in High School, but that hasn't translated to the college game so far. So, the platoon at point looks like Velez, Schmidt, and Nelson. We have some really good options next year at the guard position with some 3 point shooters and a little more speed and athleticism with incoming freshman Camdyn Nelson.
If we take a look at the forward position, this is where we appear to be a little short on depth. Current Freshman Keira Scott, and Shy Hawkins have demonstrated some flashes, especially Scott, who is multi-positional player and has played the 5,4, and 3. Incoming freshman Jasmyn Cooper, the 48th raked player in the class of 25, based on her film, appears to be a solid addition to the front court and looks to be a wing player at the 3 spot. Cooper and Hawkins will give us some much needed athleticism out on the wing and should help in our transition game. With the added speed on the perimeter, Syracuse should be able to score more in transition(Provided we can rebound) and take advantage of spot up transition 3 pointers by Sophie Burroughs and Mandy Potts. Incoming freshman, Justus Fitzgerald, at 6-1, comes in listed as an interior player/power forward, who was not highly ranked and may be a bit of a "Sleeper" in this class.
Last, but not least, this bring ust to the Post Position. Currently, Journey Thompson, listed at 6-3, is our tallest player on next year's roster. The hope here is that in the portal, Syracuse can find at least two and maybe 3 players, that are 6-3 - 6-4, who can rebound and provide an interior scoring option. Other teams seem to be able to find these type players, why can't we? There are some under recruited, non Power 5 players, who have experience and know how to play the game, and want to play in a P5 conference, that will be in the Portal this year. The foreign market, that was once an under scouted treasure trove of talent especially in the post, should be looked at, but the competition for those players is expected to be intense.
Overall, I think next year's team, if the right post players can be brought in, has the potential to be competitive. We have some "Big" roster spots to fill and I hope our staff can get it done. Let's go Orange
