Class of 2023 PG Garwey Dual (TX) Portal from McNeese St

One thing about Dual is that he seems to make more plays with being long and athletic as a guard more than great defensive position. I watched some the extended Vanderbilt highlights and he seems to roam a lot on defense. Obviously defending the Vandy guards is a tall order but he was out of position a number of times and several he was able to recover or make a play. Very interesting player. He had his hands down a lot on defense too for such a good defender so the fact he is so good in advanced metrics as a defender while needing to be a bit more fundamentally sound is impressive at least.

Offensively he’s good in the break and hard to guard taking it to the rim. Decent looking outside shot when open.. nothing textbook but it works. Unselfish and a distributor although some of his passes look too weak and soft to me even if Vandy didn’t get there hands on them.

Oh and he didn’t make any real concerted effort to attack the glass either. That definitely bothered me as being 6-5 200 with a 6-10 wingspan there is no excuse not to use that advantage on the glass as a guard.

Ehh. Ok. There are just word salad phrases largely. That’s like Fran’s DART and then we watched last years team. No coach wants guys who don’t work hard. But every coach wants a guy who helps them win games. The guy who’s a bulldog on the court is a great trait but there’s only so many of those guys, just like there are only so many great shooters, guys who see the floor or are great at boxing out.
I hear you and with any other coach I'd prob put it in the "coach speak word salad garbage disposal"

The player from our history who prob had the most is Gmac and then his kids played that way last year, so I think it may be more than just words this go around

We'll see...

I don’t disagree with any of that.

Dual talk starts @ 29:30. Some rando NBA draftniks pretty high on him, fwiw.

I don't mean to rain on the parade, and to be clear, it's always a good sign that people saw potential in him. But this was before he had ever played a minute of college basketball and their takeaway was that he's a one and done caliber guy and instead he was a legitimate trainwreck as a freshman lol.

He clearly finally found his footing this season at McNeese, albeit as a guy that was in and out of the starting lineup.

The questions, to me, are (1) Is that more a result of him going down several tiers in terms of level of competition vs. legitimate development and (2) Even if the latter, is he a lead guard or secondary/tertiary creator?

I am personally skeptical on #2 (I will also fully admit I hated Copeland's playstyle so that comparison is an immediate turnoff to me lol).

I think whatever the questions are of Dual offensively though, he's likely a great fit for what we're looking for defensively. And maybe that outweighs the offense even if the offense is an issue (which it totally might not be!)

The way I see his recruitment is that GMac is looking for Senior leadership (since none exists on the current roster) from someone who comes from a winning program. McNeese had a great season (28-6), won their conference tournament and made the dance. He was the pilot of the ship and had a solid but unspectacular season. Seems to me HCGM is looking for an older player who knows how to lead a team, defend at a high level and win.

As far as level of comp goes I can't speak to it but doing a little research I see he played well against Vandy in the tournament and also played well against NCAA Champs Michigan this season in a blowout.

Seems like Dual is being recruited to be a one year culture setter who can mentor Moesch (if he comes) or possibly the Mingo Brothers - if there's any shot at either of them - or whoever the "young" PG ends up being. Or if they bring in a big ticket starter, Dual can back that player up, play valuable minutes and still be an older veteran team leader - if he's built for that, of course.

One thing is for certain, GMac certainly seems to have a good eye for talent. Dual may not be star material but he looks like a solid player.
