Class of 2023 PG Garwey Dual (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/11/26)

Gerry DEFINITELY cares about his defense.

I don't throw out comps for fun. Idk who he reminds me of. I see his offensive numbers steadily progress each year. Had great offensive numbers in the tourney.

Find the Zephir and Torrence comps laughable, but that's my opinion.
I agree he cares about defense, but I fear it's at the expense of offense, which is one of the bad lessons he learned from Boeheim. It's a philosophy that's not conducive to landing top talent or winning titles.

IMO you win with offense. Championship teams rank highly in Ken Pom offensive efficiency rankings, and they tend to score closer to 80 than 70 ppg. Defense matters but not as much.

You can win a title without being a great defensive team. But you can't if you aren't one of the offensive powerhouses.

If you can’t score against good defensive teams you’re not winning. We tank every season against good teams because we can’t consistently score the ball. You can’t win when you have five minute droughts. SU still doesn’t have anyone who can go and get a shot whenever they want. You need alpha scorers. We don’t have anyone, yet on this roster.

Bringing in Dual feels a bit like picking up Symir Torrence

The Torrence and Zephir comps are wild in here. I am not expecting him to be the next great Cuse guard, but he may very well be the best defensive guard in the portal.
Exactly. And rankings bear that out. Dual is 79 in on3, fwiw, not be all and end all. Zephyr and Torrance were way way way below that in the transfer portal.

I think we can be skeptical if he's a high level ACC player without saying its like getting 5'11 Symir Torrance from the portal. Let's not be crazy. Dual is an athletic elite defender. Good passer. Not a good shooter. The Copeland comparison feels most apt. Let's see who we surrond him with. This portal season (and 5 seasons without a NCAA berth) is making us go crazy.

Can we please stop saying "score the ball"? Why are we typing 2 extra words just to follow a trend? Do we not value our time?

The question some posters seem to be asking is whether we are certain Dual is a better option than George.

My answer is yes, for two main reasons.

First, he defends. Second, he takes care of the ball. Those are two of the most important qualities you need from a point guard,

especially on a team that needs steadiness and reliability at that position. If neither player is a proven shooter, then that naturally raises a separate question about why Gerry would target a point guard who does not significantly improve the team’s shooting.

But even with that concern, I still view Dual as the better option and a clear upgrade overall.

I don’t think he’s better than George on paper. Or that close with innate talent.

However:

1) George cannot blow by his guy coming off a pick which for someone making millions is unacceptable.

2) There were multiple games last year where I wondered if George was on the take and throwing games.
You mean dribbling into a corner to get trapped. Yup.

I like the Dual signing because I trust Gerry and the staff's evaluation of him. If you look at his time at Siena, a big part of their success was bringing in Justice Shoats from DII Lock Haven to compete for their pg position, which was an unusual move, even for a lesser conference like the MAAC.

Obviously they need to bring in another pg which might move Dual to a backup role but I am fine with him as a starter

The skepticism is over what you mentioned, ascending players. We don't have a sure thing.

Of the returning guys, Sadiq feels like he should be ascending. I'm a bigger Kiyan fan than most, but his best basketball needs to be ahead of him, and he's going to have to work like crazy to get to where we need him as a fully realized basketball player.

On the new guys...

Goodrick is pretty likely to be better than Souare, who is not good at basketball, and that's about it, and hopefully about all we need him to be.

Our Euro is intriguing but is no sure thing. So we do hope he ascends.

Doty had a strong year at Siena but is making a huge leap going to the ACC. We have to hope he's ascending in a huge way since GMAC has suggested he's a big part of the plans.

Dual I like more than most but his biggest plus is his experience and he has the kind of measurables and defensive advance stats the analytics nerds get horny over. But this is another case where we're hoping he's ascending.

The appeal to bringing in GMAC was he would have the best donor support, ie best NIL, ie get the best talent we can.

What we've seen manifest SO FAR, and could change, is a lottery ticket approach hoping enough guys ascend. We don't have a single sure thing RIGHT NOW.
Look the only kind of player who would be a sure thing would be someone who had a freshman year like DC had and you don't get that anymore because those players go in
the draft.

Someone said Dual was comparable to Samir Torrence. I assume they are saying pre-transfer.

I pulled the numbers from Evan Miya’s site. Here they are:

Dual’s OBPR for McNeese State was.2.63. His DBPR was 3.39. His overall BPR was 6.02.

Torrence’s OBPR for Marquette was 0.60. His DBPR was 0.19. His overall BPR was 0.79. This was for his last year at Marquette, which was 2020-21.

So that comparison was not a very good one.

If I knew what any of those letters meant, you would have made a very strong argument.

OK, so who's your comp? If you want to criticize my opinion, have the balls to offer your own.

Symir was supposed to be a steadying influence, like people are talking about Dual as a "mature senior".

My point is that neither displayed a lot of offense at their previous schools.

Tomcat, you are exceptional at analysis, Who is your comp, if mine is so bad?

Uh - just using Cuse guys:

Kadary?

MCW?

Frank Howard? was only slightly better shooting from 3.

Silent G - much better from 3, but worse FT’s.

I think every one of these guys turned it over more than Dual.

Yes, that's the kind of guy, at his best.

Is that good enough of a guy to start at PG for us to make the NCAAs?
