Wow, you want to see a pick play? Watch highlights of the Notre Dame v. FSU game. Early on, Notre Dame did it once very clearly on the left side of the formation with the outside WR grabbing two defenders while the inside WR caught a TD pass with no call. Late in the game, Notre Dame did it again on the right side of the formation and had trips right with both the inside and outside WRs picking defenders allowing the middle WR to be all alone for an apparent TD catch. The refs missed the first and called the second. The first was way worse than the second, though. The second I could go either way on, but the first was a no doubt about it. Kelly said after the game that they coach them to do exactly what they did, because he believes it isn't a penalty.

I rewatched the SU game on TV today and very clearly Flemming makes no contact with either defender and his defender was actually closer to Ishmael's defender than Flemming was. In essence, the two defenders almost knocked into each other, but Flemming didn't make any contact with Ishmael's defender. Horrible horrible call negated a very good TD.

Is it just my perception, or have "rub routes" becoming increasingly popular in college offenses? I just don't recall them being mentioned much until the last few years. My guess is the NCAA rules committee will need to take up the issue and it will be a "point of emphasis" in officiating next season.

Frankly I think they need to put a stop to anything resembling these rub / pick plays. Officials basically need to be taken out of judgement calls / non-calls on such routes. You pick someone - make it a flag. They don't seem like manly football plays to me anyway. My two cents.

Rubbing's racing.
